TIP: How To Create A Watchlist
Posted by Jennifer Wednesday, May 07, 2008 11:24 AM

The easiest way to simulate a watchlist is by creating a screener preset in the screener section.

1. Select one or more filters that define the stocks of your interest such as high volume, large cap etc., or enter tickers into screener's input field if you already have a list of stocks you want to monitor.
Example: "MSFT, YHOO, GOOG" screen.

2. My Presets > Save Screen

3.Anytime you want to see the recent stock data of given screen, select it from the My Presets options.

4. With a screener preset selected you can still apply additional filters to narrow down a predefined list of stocks, in the screener.

Should you have any further questions or suggestions please let us know.

This works, however it is cumbersome to add stocks to the watchlist as you go.

I use a watchlist as a repository for the best candidates I find using the screener. As I scan the screener results, I want a quick & easy way to add individual selections to the watchlist right from that screen, without leaving the screen so I can continue to scan the list.

Most sites have this ability - I hope you plan to add it to your excellent features.

I just stumbled upon this blog today and fell in love with it right at the first sight. I will be using this daily from now on. Good job!

D: Will consider a faster way of adding tickers into existing screener presets. Thanks for your comments.

Is there any way to view more than 20 tickers on a screen at a time?

I love your sight and have a few suggestions.
1)how about being able to import a watchlist from an excel sheet or from notepad?
2)would it be possible (even at a charge) to list stocks that have broken out today from an ascending triangle etc
3)As per your home page would it be possible to have a similar page for my custom portfolio which would list all the patterns eg
stocks oversold etc

I appreciate your site is free and these are only suggestions

1) Watchlist and portfolio import will be available.

2) Charts with closing price near a strong pattern can be found by the appropriate signal such as "Triangle Ascending" in the screener. More advanced technical screening will be possible via new filters.

3) Custom layouts are being considered.

Found this website after it was praised by Charles Kirk in [The Kirk Report]. Like the fact I can assign equal weights to holdings so easily: major advantage over Yahoo!. This is a huge time-saver. Others have mentioned the ability to EDIT/ADD holdings.

I've probably missed it, but would like to see technical definitions.

Gosh. Keep it up man Smile

You are doing a terrific job with this site. So many other research stock sites are repetitive, not easy to use, with poorly updated info.

Your combination of fundamental, technical, and sector analysis' seems to blend perfectly. Also, the screener is very easy to use and the ability to export is much appreciated.

I have one question and one comment:

How is your information acquired and updated? Everything works great but these screens are only as accurate as the information they are populated with.

This topic is on watch-lists...your suggestion was to use the screener but this is an ever evolving list when used that way. Sometimes you like to run a screen on a certain day and then maintain that list. If you were to run the same screen 2 weeks later the list may be very different. A truly saved watch-list would be extremely helpful because the ability you provide to look at several charts of stocks quickly saves much time. This is my only suggestion.

GREAT JOB!!! KEEP IT UP!!!

Jamie, for a static screener preset containing the same tickers all the time, you will need to input tickers directly, just like in the "MSFT, YHOO, GOOG" example.

For the other points, stock data is currently acquired from multiple paid sources with some basic noise filtering applied. Both quality and quantity of data will be continuously increased, it's one of the key goals of FINVIZ.com

Love the site! The mainpage, economics, the screener/portfolio, and the maps. Very professional.

I'd like to second the opinion that being able to add comments to stocks in the portfolio would be helpful as I am currently tracking 10 portfolios each with 7-30 stocks.

Also, I don't know your plans for the site but if you add a donation button I'm sure it would be well received to keep the service free.

Your contribution to increasing my investment returns astounds me. Every day I think of another way to use your different functions in a variety of ways to drill down to the next stock I am going to purchase. A suggestion would be to add to the site a comment board to share tips on variations of drilling down to the winners. An example that I use is to sort the stocks by the best gain for the day, week or month and then look down the screen at the percent gains looking back for the different periods until I find the mostly green biggest gains and then look at the technicals on the graph for the break outs above resistance. I also would contribute to a donation button. I owe you, big time and am willing to share.

User based inputs such as comments, tagging and ranking of stocks will certainly be added. Strategy presets will be implemented into screener in the future. In the meantime, we will start a blog post on various trading tips where everyone could comment their own. Thanks for your feedback!

Alex...I've used FINVIZ extensively since The Kirk Report praised it. It is truly a "one-stop-shop" for Fund & TA screening. I realize it's free (and wortth many times that Smile, but here are some suggestions. I assume many of us would be willing to pay:

1. Have a mechanism to adjust existing portfolios for splits. I know you do this when users mention a recent split, but isn't there a way to do it automatically? SID or CLF splits, for instance.

2. Allow users to set up folders in the Portfolio list. Since many of use run the same screens daily or weekly, it would be great to have a repository where I could have a archive of historic results for each type of screen.

3. Expanding the number of Portfolios. Fifty ports sounds like a lot unless a user wants to retain the same screen run on different dates (see point #2).

Please understand, I love this website! I will continue to use and reccomend it even if it doesn't evolve...the speed of setting up a screen makes it ten times better than Yahoo! or Google. Thanks for your consideration.

Yardman,
1. Splits are updated automatically, that's not an issue anymore.
2.-3. Usability and workflow of the existing features will be optimized.
Thanks for your tips.
