Tom Brady Joins Telehealth Startup eMed
In 23 seasons in the NFL, Brady accomplished things many athletes couldn't dream of. Now retired for a second time, Brady is a part NFL team owner (Las Vegas Raiders) and a sports broadcaster for Fox Corporation (NASDAQ:FOXA).
This week, Brady announced a new role in his post-NFL career.
Brady announced that he is the founding chief wellness officer for eMed, a company that specializes in GLP-1 weight management programs for businesses and individuals, offering access to FDA-approved weight-loss drugs, but also focuses on broader metabolic health, including cardiovascular and diabetes management.
"We're working on something that I believe really matters," Brady said in a video shared on social media.
The NFL great said eMed is improving population health at scale and will make people feel better, along with helping with accountability that helps people stay on track.
"That mindset: discipline, consistency, showing up, define my career."
Brady's video post shared his excitement to join the company that is led by CEO Linda Yaccarino.
"We're just getting started and I'm proud to be part of it."
Yaccarino, who is known to many investors as the former CEO of social media platform X, shared details of the company and Brady's role during and interview with CNBC.
"I'm so lucky to have him by my side," Yaccarino said of Brady.
Brady joins a growing list of celebrities who have publicly endorsed or advertise for GLP-1 medications, including tennis great Serena Williams.
It is unknown all the details of Brady's new role with the company, but he is no stranger to appearing in commercials, including new Pizza Hut ads that see him yelling "hut" at customers. Brady's part ownership of the Raiders and relationship with the NFL could also see future partnerships for eMed coming.
Transformation Moment for Health Care
"People underestimate the transformational impact that these GLP-1 medications have," Yaccarino told CNBC.
The eMed CEO said her company helps provide support consumers in their health care journey, which to her extends a career of trying to transform things that touch people's lives, including media, technology and now health care.
"You have the emergence of the biggest health intervention of maybe humanity's history, and it's the GLP-1 medications."
GLP-1 medications, also known as weight loss drugs, have emerged as a big item and market in the health care industry with companies like Novo Nordisk A/S (NYSE:NVO) and Eli Lilly And Co (NYSE:LLY) offering options such as Wegovy, Ozempic and Zepbound to help consumers with diabetes, weight loss and more.
Yaccarino said the health care sector was "ripe for transformation."
eMed is differentiated from other weight-loss drug company platforms with weekly check-ins, accountability and personalization, Yaccarino told CNBC.
"We are not a quick fix."
Yaccarino said this tough work and accountability mindset is why Brady selected eMed.
eMed is backed by Aon plc (NYSE:AON). The investment came after eMed helped develop a subsidized GLP-1 weight management benefit program for Aon's U.S. workforce earlier this year. In six months, over 1,200 people registered for the program and lost an average of 22.4 pounds.
Moving on From X
Yaccarino served as the CEO of X for around two years, helping the company navigate from the acquisition by Musk to becoming what she called "the global town square."
"I'm proud of what we accomplished during my time," Yaccarino told CNBC.
Yaccarino was asked about a pivotal moment in X's history under Musk in which the billionaire told advertisers to go f*** themselves.
"I would've used different words."
The former X CEO said that transformation moves are not always tidy.
In less than two years, Yaccarino has now worked directly with the world's richest person and the man considered by many to be the greatest NFL player of all time.
