Pratt & Whitney, a business unit of RTX (NYSE:RTX), has acquired Dutch technology company Aiir Innovations as it looks to expand the use of artificial intelligence across its aircraft engine inspection and maintenance operations.
AI technology to enhance engine inspections
According to a company announcement released on 15 July 2026, Aiir Innovations has developed AI-assisted software that analyses borescope inspection footage, helping engineers identify potential issues more quickly and consistently.
Pratt & Whitney said the technology has already been introduced by commercial customers and maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) providers, where it has reduced engine inspection times.
The software has been deployed on the V2500 engine and has also completed pilot programmes for Pratt & Whitney’s GTF and F135 engine families. The company plans to expand the technology across additional engine programmes.
Faster and more consistent maintenance
The AI platform continuously improves by incorporating feedback from inspectors and includes customisable reporting tools.
According to Pratt & Whitney, processes that previously required significant manual effort can now be completed within minutes, improving efficiency while delivering more consistent inspection results.
Supporting global maintenance operations
Rob Griffiths, Senior Vice President of Commercial Engines Operations at Pratt & Whitney, said:
“Broadening the integration of AI-assisted inspection capability strengthens our ability to detect issues earlier, improve turnaround times, increase time on wing and reduce operational disruption for our customers.”
The company said the technology will support maintenance, repair and overhaul activities across commercial, civil and military aircraft engines worldwide.
Financial terms not disclosed
Pratt & Whitney did not reveal the financial details of the acquisition.
The transaction reflects the company’s continued investment in artificial intelligence as it seeks to improve maintenance efficiency, reduce aircraft downtime and enhance operational performance for airline and defence customers.
