Strong quarterly performance overshadowed by softer near-term outlook
Danaher Corporation (NYSE:DHR) reported second-quarter results that exceeded Wall Street expectations, but investors focused on a more cautious growth outlook for the current quarter, sending the shares down 9% in pre-market trading.
The life sciences and diagnostics company posted adjusted earnings per share of $1.94, topping analyst estimates of $1.84. Revenue rose 5.5% year over year to $6.3 billion, ahead of the consensus forecast of $6.1 billion.
Company lifts full-year earnings guidance
Danaher reported core revenue growth of 3.0% during the quarter, or 4.5% excluding respiratory testing revenue.
The company also increased its full-year 2026 adjusted earnings per share guidance to a range of $8.45 to $8.60, compared with its previous outlook of $8.35 to $8.55. The midpoint of the updated forecast is slightly above analysts’ consensus estimate of $8.50.
Third-quarter growth forecast disappoints investors
Despite the stronger quarterly performance, the market reacted negatively to Danaher’s guidance for the third quarter.
Management expects core revenue growth of between 2.0% and 3.0% in the third quarter, while maintaining a full-year core revenue growth forecast of 3.0% to 4.0%.
The more moderate near-term outlook appeared to outweigh the earnings beat and higher full-year profit guidance in investors’ assessment.
Life Sciences segment leads quarterly growth
“We delivered a better than expected second quarter, with core growth improving versus the first quarter and disciplined execution driving high-single-digits adjusted EPS growth,” said Rainer Blair, President and Chief Executive Officer. “Our Life Sciences businesses delivered their strongest quarter in several years and while customer project timing impacted bioprocessing revenue, underlying order trends remained strong and bioprocessing orders grew mid-teens in the quarter.”
Among the company’s operating divisions, the Life Sciences segment recorded the strongest performance with 5.5% core revenue growth. Biotechnology delivered 2.5% growth, while Diagnostics increased 2.0%.
Danaher also generated $1.5 billion in operating cash flow during the quarter, with free cash flow totaling $1.3 billion.
