Earnings and revenue fall short of expectations
Shares of Pegasystems (NASDAQ:PEGA) dropped 16.7% in premarket trading to $25.78 after the enterprise software provider reported second-quarter 2026 results that missed Wall Street expectations for both earnings and revenue.
The Waltham, Massachusetts-based company posted adjusted earnings per share of $0.35, missing the consensus forecast of $0.43 by $0.08. Revenue increased 9% year over year to $420.7 million but came in below analysts’ expectations of $427.4 million.
Management said “unprecedented changes in the AI market” have led enterprise customers to delay purchasing decisions, warning that the trend could continue to weigh on Annual Contract Value (ACV) growth through the rest of 2026.
Analysts lower expectations following results
The earnings report prompted an immediate reaction from analysts, with Citizens downgrading Pegasystems from Market Outperform to Market Perform after weaker-than-expected quarterly performance and slower customer deal activity linked to AI-related uncertainty.
The brokerage highlighted that total ACV growth slowed to 7% year over year, down from 12% in the previous quarter, signalling a noticeable loss of momentum.
The downgrade follows another analyst’s neutral recommendation issued ahead of the earnings release in early July, which cited uncertainty surrounding the company’s underlying growth trajectory and suggested waiting for the quarterly results before taking a more constructive view.
Insider selling adds to investor concerns
Investor sentiment was also affected by insider trading activity. Company filings show that Pegasystems executives, including Chief Executive Officer Alan Trefler, completed 21 open-market share sales over the past six months, while no insider purchases were recorded during the same period.
The broader market offered little explanation for the sharp decline. At the time of trading, the S&P 500 was down 0.4%, the Dow Jones Industrial Average had slipped 0.2%, and the Nasdaq was lower by 0.9%, suggesting the weakness in Pegasystems shares was largely driven by company-specific factors.
The latest results also mark the second consecutive quarter in which both total revenue and subscription revenue have fallen more than 4% short of analyst estimates, reinforcing concerns that the company’s ongoing shift toward cloud-based and recurring revenue has yet to deliver the growth investors were expecting.
