Report points to tensions over AI data agreement
Reddit (NYSE:RDDT) shares fell 5.8% in premarket trading on Wednesday after reports suggested the social media platform is considering restricting Google’s access to its content as negotiations continue over a new artificial intelligence data licensing agreement.
According to a report by The Wall Street Journal, Reddit is weighing whether to limit Alphabet’s ability to use discussions from its platform to train AI models as the companies seek to renew their existing commercial agreement.
The current arrangement, signed in 2024, is reportedly worth around $60 million annually and allows Google to use Reddit’s content to support the development of its AI products.
AI search changes create new pressure
At the centre of the negotiations is the changing role of search traffic.
Google’s AI-powered search features increasingly provide direct answers to users’ questions within search results, reducing the need for users to visit external websites such as Reddit.
While Reddit’s discussions remain an important source of information for Google’s search ecosystem, the growth of AI-generated responses could reduce referral traffic to the platform, potentially affecting advertising revenue.
The reported dispute highlights the growing tension between content owners seeking compensation for valuable training data and technology companies developing generative AI services.
Publishers reassess AI partnerships
Reddit is not alone in reviewing its AI licensing strategy.
According to the report, several major publishers, including Reuters, Politico, The Economist, USA Today and People, are also reassessing their relationships with Google as AI-generated search results reshape how users access online content.
The shift reflects broader concerns across the publishing industry about balancing licensing revenue with the long-term value of maintaining website traffic.
Human-generated content becomes increasingly valuable
The debate comes as authentic user-generated content becomes an increasingly important resource for training large language models.
Separately, data from Cloudflare indicates that automated bots now account for more than half of global web traffic, increasing the value of genuine human-created discussions hosted on platforms such as Reddit.
As AI developers continue to compete for high-quality training data, licensing agreements are becoming a more strategic component of both publishers’ business models and the broader AI ecosystem.
