Circle Internet Group (NYSE:CRCL) shares gained 3.7% on Monday after the company announced it had acquired IBM’s blockchain patent portfolio, significantly expanding its intellectual property holdings in digital asset and blockchain technologies.
According to the company, the acquisition includes more than 680 patent families and nearly 1,000 issued patents worldwide covering a broad range of technologies, including blockchain, banking, financial services, insurance, enterprise infrastructure, supply chain verification and secure cloud computing.
Deal strengthens Circle’s blockchain portfolio
Circle said the transaction positions the company as the largest holder of blockchain-related patents in the United States.
The expanded patent portfolio is expected to support the continued development of the company’s digital financial products, including USDC, the Circle Payments Network, Arc and other onchain infrastructure and financial services.
Companies to explore future collaboration
In addition to the intellectual property acquisition, Circle and IBM said they intend to explore further commercial opportunities together.

The acquisition reinforces Circle’s strategy of strengthening the technology underpinning its digital payments and blockchain ecosystem as adoption of tokenized finance and onchain applications continues to grow.
By expanding its intellectual property portfolio, the company aims to support future innovation while reinforcing its position within the rapidly evolving blockchain and digital asset industry.
