AMC Theatres (NYSE:AMC) announced that The Odyssey has delivered the highest IMAX box office revenue ever recorded at its cinemas during the first two weekends of a film’s release.
The record covers the period from July 16 through July 26 and highlights strong demand for premium large-format screenings.
Blockbuster opening drives IMAX performance
The Odyssey generated approximately $124.5 million at the North American box office during its opening weekend before adding another reported $87 million in domestic ticket sales during its second weekend.
By July 26, the film had earned roughly $286 million across North America and approximately $640 million worldwide.
AMC, which operates around half of all IMAX screens in the United States and more IMAX locations than any other cinema chain in North America, said IMAX presentations accounted for a significant portion of ticket sales.
IMAX 70mm screenings continue to sell out
The company reported exceptionally strong demand for IMAX 70mm presentations of the film.
AMC Lincoln Square 13 in New York once again operated IMAX 70mm screenings continuously from Friday through Sunday during the movie’s second weekend, matching its schedule from opening weekend.
According to AMC, many IMAX 70mm performances remain sold out through the middle of August.
The company added that it is working alongside Universal Pictures and IMAX to increase the number of IMAX 70mm showings where scheduling allows.
Premium format strategy delivers results
AMC Chairman and CEO Adam Aron said, “We at AMC have long believed that our investing in premium large format experiences will be welcomed and valued by moviegoers. Today, AMC operates more IMAX locations than any other exhibitor in North America, and our guests are rewarding that commitment in record numbers.”
The company also noted that The Odyssey was filmed entirely using IMAX cameras, helping drive demand for the premium viewing experience.
