European regulators have officially approved the latest 2026–2027 COVID-19 vaccine formula from Pfizer (NYSE:PFE) and BioNTech (NASDAQ:BNTX). Designed to protect against the widespread XFG variant—which accounted for nearly three-quarters of global infections at its height in October 2025—the new vaccine is cleared for use in patients aged six months and up.
Built using BioNTech’s proprietary messenger RNA framework, the underlying technology has now been utilized in over five billion doses distributed worldwide.
This marketing clearance applies across all 27 European Union member nations, alongside Liechtenstein, Iceland and Norway. Approval was granted after the European Medicines Agency evaluated clinical data provided by the pharmaceutical partners demonstrating solid safety outcomes and a robust antibody response against prevailing strains, including XFG, NB.1.8.1, XFG.1.1, PQ.2.8.1, and PQ.17.
Production of the revised formula is already underway ahead of the fall and winter seasons, as noted in Wednesday’s official announcement. Simultaneously, both firms are filing relevant data packages with international health agencies.
