LEAWOOD, Kan.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--AMC Entertainment Holdings, Inc. (NYSE: AMC), the largest theatrical exhibitor in the United States and the world, today announced that the Company generated the highest total revenue in the U.S. and globally in AMC history during a single weekend – Wednesday through Sunday – including the highest ever admissions revenue, and the highest ever food & beverage revenue. SPIDER-MAN: BRAND NEW DAY debuted Wednesday at ODEON Cinemas internationally and Thursday at domestic AMC theatres.

Powered by the record-setting opening of SPIDER-MAN: BRAND NEW DAY, more than 10.2 million moviegoers attended AMC Theatres in the United States and ODEON Cinemas internationally from Wednesday through Sunday, making it AMC’s highest-attended weekend of the decade domestic and globally, and third highest-attended weekend in Company history domestic and globally.
Guests flocked to AMC's premium experiences in particularly strong numbers. In the United States, AMC delivered the highest-grossing Dolby Cinema at AMC weekend in Company history, continuing a trend of growing consumer demand for premium theatrical experiences offering spectacular picture and immersive sound. IMAX screens were also extraordinarily well attended, as moviegoers continued to pour out to theatres to watch Christopher Nolan’s THE ODYSSEY.
In the United States, where the film opened on Thursday, AMC’s theatres were busy from the minute previews commenced for SPIDER-MAN: BRAND NEW DAY. Thursday of this week generated the highest admission revenues for any Thursday in AMC Theatres history. Friday was a repeat: AMC Theatres enjoyed the highest Friday admission revenues for any Friday in AMC history. And on Saturday, the record setting continued, as Saturday marked the highest Saturday admission revenues for any Saturday in AMC Theatres history. Not to be outdone, Sunday followed suit, with the highest Sunday admission revenues ever for AMC Theatres.
AMC’s success extended beyond ticket sales. AMC also set a domestic and global record for all-time food and beverage revenue during a single weekend, beating the previous record set during the opening weekend of AVENGERS: ENDGAME in 2019.
AMC Chairman and CEO Adam Aron commented, “Our sincerest congratulations to director Destin Daniel Cretton, the entire cast and crew, and our friends at Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios on this extraordinary opening weekend for SPIDER-MAN: BRAND NEW DAY.”
Aron continued, “For AMC, this was a truly historic weekend. In welcoming more than 10.2 million moviegoers around the world, AMC established this weekend a new all-time Company weekend record for admissions revenue and a new all-time Company weekend record for food & beverage revenue. It is a powerful and unmistakable reminder that audiences overwhelmingly embrace the theatrical experience when studios release films that audiences want to see and support them with strong marketing campaigns. This is not a new phenomenon this year. This is the ninth different movie title since March to have a gangbusters opening-weekend gross.”
Aron concluded, “AMC Entertainment’s results this weekend once again clearly demonstrate that moviegoing remains a deeply valued part of our culture the world over, and that excitement for seeing movies in theatres is as strong as ever. On behalf of the more than 30,000 AMC and ODEON employees worldwide, who worked so hard to welcome and serve our guests, I thank audiences around the globe for choosing AMC and ODEON and for making this one a weekend for the ages."
The success of SPIDER-MAN: BRAND NEW DAY comes as THE ODYSSEY continues its remarkable run at AMC. Demand for Christopher Nolan's epic remains particularly strong in our more than 200 IMAX screens globally, including in New York City’s AMC Lincoln Square 13, which operated around-the-clock IMAX 70mm showtimes Friday through Sunday for the third straight weekend. With audiences continuing to flock to premium screens more than two weeks after the initial release of THE ODYSSEY, demand remains so strong that AMC, IMAX, and Universal Pictures have extended IMAX 70mm engagements of THE ODYSSEY into September at select locations.
