Caterpillar Shares Climb After Strong Second-Quarter Earnings Beat

By Fiona Craig | August 04, 2026, 8:17 AM

Caterpillar Inc. (NYSE:CAT) shares rose more than 5% in pre-market trading after the industrial equipment manufacturer reported second-quarter 2026 results that comfortably exceeded Wall Street expectations, driven by higher equipment demand across its core businesses.

The company delivered stronger-than-expected earnings and revenue, supported by robust sales growth in its Construction Industries, Power & Energy and Resource Industries divisions.

Revenue Reaches Record Quarterly High

Caterpillar reported adjusted earnings of $8.17 per share, beating the analyst consensus estimate of $6.19 by $1.98.

Revenue increased to $20.5 billion, surpassing market expectations of $19.24 billion and rising 24% from $16.6 billion in the same quarter last year.

Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Joe Creed highlighted the milestone achieved during the quarter.

“This is the first time in company history that we have generated over $20 billion in sales and revenues in a single quarter,” he said.

Higher Equipment Demand Drives Performance

The company’s results were supported by a $3.1 billion increase in sales volume, along with favourable pricing that contributed an additional $595 million across its three main operating segments.

Adjusted earnings per share rose sharply from $4.72 in the second quarter of 2025, while operating profit climbed 50% to $4.3 billion from $2.9 billion a year earlier.

Adjusted operating margin also improved significantly, increasing to 21.9% from 17.6% in the prior-year period.

Construction and Power Businesses Lead Growth

Construction Industries delivered the strongest performance, with revenue jumping 35% to $8.3 billion as demand for equipment in North America remained robust.

The Power & Energy division reported a 17% increase in sales to $8.2 billion, supported by continued demand for large reciprocating engines and turbines used in data centre applications.

Meanwhile, Resource Industries generated revenue of $4.6 billion, up 20% from a year earlier, driven by higher equipment sales to customers in the mining and rail sectors.

Financial Products Also Posts Solid Quarter

Caterpillar’s Financial Products segment continued to perform well during the quarter.

Revenue increased 10% to $1.1 billion, while segment profit rose 32% to $328 million.

The improvement reflected growth in average earning assets and stronger profitability within the company’s Insurance Services business.
