T-Mobile CEO Says Starlink's Competitive Threat to Mobile Networks Is Overstated

The competitive risk posed by satellite providers such as Starlink has been overstated, according to T-Mobile (NASDAQ:TMUS) Chief Executive Srini Gopalan, who argued that traditional mobile operators remain well positioned to meet consumers’ connectivity needs.

Speaking in an interview with the Financial Times, Gopalan questioned the role satellite-based mobile services are expected to play and suggested that telecom companies should remain focused on offering products that clearly address customer demand and differentiate themselves from existing services.

Comments Come Ahead of SpaceX Mobile Expansion

Gopalan’s remarks were made before Elon Musk confirmed on Tuesday that SpaceX intends to launch a mobile network in the United States through its Starlink business.

During SpaceX’s earnings call, Musk said Starlink’s planned terrestrial mobile network should deliver stronger connectivity and greater bandwidth than today’s cellular providers.

The Financial Times published Gopalan’s interview on Thursday evening.

SpaceX Targets US Telecom Customers

SpaceX President and Chief Operating Officer Gwynne Shotwell said the company expects its future mobile service to attract subscribers from the three largest US wireless operators: AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile.

According to Shotwell, Starlink Mobile satellites are scheduled for launch next year, with commercial services expected to begin by the end of 2027.

Satellite Networks Seen as a Complement

Despite SpaceX’s expansion plans, Gopalan maintained that satellite technology is more likely to complement existing mobile infrastructure than replace it.

SpaceX has already partnered with several telecommunications companies, including T-Mobile, by providing satellite connectivity to extend network coverage in remote and underserved areas.

No Comment on Deutsche Telekom Merger Reports

Gopalan also declined to respond to media reports suggesting that T-Mobile is discussing a potential $267 billion merger with its majority shareholder, Deutsche Telekom.
