Pony.ai (NASDAQ:PONY) announced on Friday that it intends to deploy more than 2,000 robotaxis across Europe as part of an expanded partnership with ride-hailing company Uber Technologies (NYSE:UBER).
The planned rollout represents a significant expansion of the companies’ autonomous mobility collaboration as Pony.ai seeks to extend its technology into additional international markets.
Partnership to expand beyond Zagreb
Pony.ai and Uber originally launched their partnership in May 2025, with the collaboration subsequently supporting a commercial robotaxi service in Zagreb, Croatia.
Under the expanded agreement, the companies intend to take their autonomous ride-hailing operations into four additional European cities.
Pony.ai has not yet identified which cities will be included in the next phase of the rollout and did not provide a timetable for when the additional robotaxis are expected to enter service.
The deployment of more than 2,000 vehicles would substantially increase the scale of the partnership’s European presence and broaden access to autonomous transportation services.
European expansion strengthens autonomous driving ambitions
The initiative marks another step in Pony.ai’s strategy to commercialise autonomous driving technology beyond its home market.
Working with Uber provides Pony.ai with access to an established ride-hailing platform and customer network, potentially allowing its autonomous vehicles to reach passengers more efficiently as regulatory approvals are secured in individual markets.
For Uber, the partnership provides another route for incorporating autonomous vehicles into its mobility platform without relying on a single self-driving technology provider.
Middle East projects also planned
The expanded collaboration will not be limited to Europe, with Pony.ai also confirming that the partnership includes projects in the Middle East.
The company did not disclose further details about the planned Middle Eastern operations, including potential markets, fleet sizes or launch dates.
The combination of the European robotaxi deployment and additional Middle East projects points to a broader international expansion of the Pony.ai-Uber partnership as both companies seek to build their positions in the developing autonomous mobility market.
