GE Vernova Launches Medium-Voltage Power System for AI Data Centers

GE Vernova Inc. (NYSE:GEV) has introduced a new medium-voltage uninterruptible power supply designed to meet the growing electricity requirements of data centers, artificial intelligence infrastructure and other power-intensive facilities.

The new MV-UPS system moves power protection to the medium-voltage level, rather than relying primarily on the low-voltage protection traditionally used within data centers. GE Vernova says this approach could provide more coordinated protection across larger sections of a facility while helping manage increasingly complex power requirements.

MV-UPS Targets Growing Data Center Power Demands

The system is positioned between a facility’s incoming electricity supply and its critical loads, allowing a single platform to provide protection across a broader part of the electrical infrastructure.

GE Vernova says the design can also help limit the impact of sudden changes in electricity demand on the wider grid or on generation assets located at the facility.

This capability is becoming increasingly important as AI data centers require substantial and rapidly changing amounts of electricity, creating new challenges for grid stability and onsite power management.

The MV-UPS combines power-conversion technology with advanced controls and integrated energy storage to maintain stable voltage and frequency during fluctuations or interruptions.

GE Vernova Aims to Simplify Data Center Infrastructure

Beyond providing backup power protection, the technology has been developed to help customers comply with power-quality and grid-connection requirements.

Moving UPS functionality to the medium-voltage level could also simplify downstream electrical infrastructure by reducing the need for multiple individual protection systems closer to critical equipment.

“Reliable, uninterrupted power is foundational to every energy-intensive industry, and AI data centers are raising that requirement to a new level of scale and complexity,” said Philippe Piron, CEO of GE Vernova’s Electrification segment.

First MV-UPS Shipments Expected in 2027

GE Vernova expects commercial shipments of the new MV-UPS systems to begin in mid-2027, with the first project scheduled to be energised towards the end of that year.

The technology expands the company’s existing portfolio of equipment and services aimed at the rapidly growing data center industry.

GE Vernova already supplies gas turbines, substations, transformers, switchgear, energy management systems and power-conversion technologies for data center infrastructure.

The company is also separately developing solid-state transformer technology designed to bring power conversion closer to computing racks, potentially providing another solution for the increasingly demanding electrical architecture required by next-generation AI facilities.

The expansion of its data center portfolio positions NYSE:GEV to target growing investment in AI infrastructure as operators seek more reliable, scalable and grid-compatible power systems.
