PayPal (NASDAQ:PYPL) has cut around 600 jobs in India, equivalent to approximately 10% of its workforce in the country, as part of a broader global restructuring, Moneycontrol reported on Thursday.
According to people familiar with the matter cited by Moneycontrol, the reductions affected employees across technology, engineering, operations, payments and finance. Job cuts were reported at PayPal’s offices in Chennai, Bengaluru and Hyderabad.
PayPal had more than 6,000 employees in India, making the reported reduction equivalent to roughly 10% of its local workforce.
Job Cuts Began on August 31
Moneycontrol reported that affected employees began receiving calls informing them of the reductions on August 31.
One employee told the publication that access to PayPal’s company systems was revoked immediately following the termination call.
According to the report, affected employees were offered job-placement assistance and were told they would receive one month’s salary as severance. Some employees said they were still waiting for information regarding their final settlements.
PayPal Targets $1.5 Billion in Run-Rate Savings
The reported reductions in India form part of PayPal’s wider restructuring plans.
Management announced in May that the company planned to reduce its global workforce by 20% over the following two to three years. PayPal is targeting at least $1.5 billion in gross run-rate savings over that period.
The company had approximately 23,800 employees globally at the end of 2025. A 20% reduction based on that headcount would represent approximately 4,760 positions.
India Operations Support PayPal’s Technology Functions
PayPal opened its first development centre in Chennai in 2008. Its operations in Bengaluru and Hyderabad support functions including machine learning, artificial intelligence, fraud prevention, risk management and data science.
Moneycontrol noted that the reported PayPal reductions follow workforce cuts or restructuring plans at other multinational technology and services operations in India.
