AMC Entertainment Shares Rise 9.1% Following Leawood Films Distribution Launch

By Fiona Craig | September 04, 2026, 6:25 AM

AMC Entertainment (NYSE:AMC) shares rose 9.1% in pre-market trading as investors assessed the cinema operator’s recently announced Leawood Films distribution venture alongside its latest financial performance.

AMC announced Leawood Films after the market close on August 31, 2026. The new distribution business will focus on films that are either fully financed by their filmmakers or have already been completed.

The company plans to use its existing exhibition, marketing and distribution capabilities to distribute films to cinema operators in the U.S. and international markets.

Former Warner Bros, Disney and Paramount Executives Advise Venture

Leawood Films is being advised by three former senior film-industry executives.

They include Toby Emmerich, former Chairman of Warner Bros. Pictures Group; Ricky Strauss, former President of Marketing at The Walt Disney Studios; and Kyle Davies, former President of Domestic Distribution at Paramount Pictures.

The distribution initiative represents an expansion of AMC’s activities beyond its core cinema exhibition operations.

AMC Reports Record Q2 Revenue

The launch follows AMC’s second-quarter 2026 results, when revenue reached a record $1.6 billion, representing an increase of 14.2% from the same period a year earlier.

Adjusted earnings per share were $0.14, compared with analyst expectations for a loss of $0.02 per share.

Adjusted EBITDA increased 70% to $321.4 million, while the corresponding margin expanded to 20.1%. Free cash flow for the quarter reached $190.1 million.

The company continues to carry substantial debt and has also experienced shareholder dilution, factors that remain relevant to its financial position.

Summer Box Office Reaches Post-Pandemic High

AMC’s latest developments come as the U.S. cinema industry reports higher summer box-office receipts.

Films including “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” and “The Odyssey” contributed to domestic summer box-office revenue of $4.26 billion in 2026, according to the supplied report. This represented the highest level since the COVID-19 pandemic and only the second post-pandemic summer season to exceed $4 billion.

Broader U.S. equity markets showed limited movement alongside AMC’s pre-market gain, with the S&P 500 up 0.1% and the Dow Jones trading fractionally lower.

AMC shares remained below their 52-week high of $3.18 despite the 9.1% pre-market advance.
