Corning Incorporated (NYSE:GLW) shares gained 3% on Monday after the company announced a multi-year, multi-billion-dollar supply agreement with Verizon Communications (NYSE:VZ) covering optical fibre and connectivity products through 2032.
Under the agreement, Corning will supply Verizon with more than 80 million miles of high-density optical fibre and connectivity solutions between 2027 and 2032. The infrastructure will support Verizon’s expansion of consumer broadband services as well as growing connectivity requirements associated with artificial intelligence computing.
The agreement represents a significant long-term commitment for Corning’s Optical Communications business and extends a commercial relationship between the two companies that has lasted approximately three decades.
Verizon plans to use the additional fibre capacity as it works towards reaching between 40 million and 50 million broadband passings, expanding fibre-to-the-home services and connectivity for local businesses.
The network will also provide infrastructure for AI workloads, including connections between data centres across major long-distance routes. Demand for high-capacity, low-latency connectivity has increased as hyperscale technology companies invest heavily in AI computing infrastructure.
Kyle Malady, CEO of Verizon Business, said: “Securing this volume of fiber allows us to continue building the network of the future at an unprecedented scale.”
He added: “We are deploying a single, converged architecture that unites mobile connectivity and broadband into one seamless experience for millions of families and businesses, while simultaneously building the high-capacity, low-latency backbone AI hyperscalers demand.”
The products included in the agreement will feature Corning’s Contour Flow Cable, which is designed to allow operators to install greater quantities of optical fibre through existing conduit infrastructure.
The scale of the Verizon agreement is also expected to support an expansion of Corning’s U.S. manufacturing footprint as the company prepares to meet the additional supply requirements.
Mike O’Day, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Corning Optical Communications, said: “Corning is thrilled to deepen our three-decade partnership with Verizon as we provide our latest optical innovations in fiber, cable, and connectivity to link AI data centers together while ensuring more Americans have access to AI with high-speed fiber connections at home.”
For Corning, the agreement provides long-term demand visibility in a market benefiting from investment in both traditional broadband infrastructure and AI-related data-centre connectivity.
The combination of more than 80 million miles of contracted fibre supply, Verizon’s broadband expansion plans and increasing infrastructure requirements from AI computing helped provide a positive catalyst for Corning shares following the announcement.
