Oil Stock Nears Record High After Price-Target Boost

By Liliana Orozco | September 14, 2026, 10:52 AM

Shares of Marathon Petroleum Corporation (NYSE:MPC) are up 2% to trade at $403.70 today, as global oil prices continue to ascend after Saudi Arabia shuttered a pipeline that bypasses the Strait of Hormuz over the weekend. Raymond James hiked its price target on MPC to $445 from $350 as well, a 10% premium to MPC's current perch.

Marathon stock has gained 149% since the start of 2026 and sits just 1.2% below its September 11 all-time high of $408.69. If today's gains hold, MPC could also secure its 12th win in the past 13 trading sessions.

Options traders are betting on a pullback. MPC sports a 50-day put/call volume ratio of 0.75 on the International Securities Exchange (ISE), Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE), and NASDAQ OMX PHLX (PHLX). This ratio sits in the 96th percentile of its annual range, hinting at a much healthier-than-usual appetite for bearish bets over bullish of late.

Regardless of direction, options are an intriguing route. MPC's Schaeffer's Volatility Scorecard (SVS) sits at a relatively high 87 out of 100, indicating the stock has tended to exceed option traders' volatility expectations during the past year
