Surescripts, Oracle Health Partner to Help Clear Prescription Barriers for Patients Nationwide

ARLINGTON, Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--#HealthIT--Surescripts® and Oracle Health are working together to help remove the barriers that keep patients from starting the medication their care team prescribed. Through the partnership, Surescripts Prior Authorization Automation will be available to prescribers within the Oracle Health workflow, helping patients access needed therapies without delays.

In a 2025 survey, 95% of physicians said the prior authorization process sometimes delays care, and 79% said it at least sometimes leads to treatment abandonment. Additionally, 1 in 4 people indicated that the cost of medications prevented them from filling a prescription, according to a report.

Oracle and Surescripts will also explore incorporating First-Fill Abandonment within Oracle Health workflows to give providers insights into patients’ medication adherence before claims data arrives, allowing for earlier intervention when needed.

Background

• Surescripts Prior Authorization Automation automatically matches clinical data with determination criteria at the time of prescribing by automatically retrieving the required information from the patient's electronic health record and sending it electronically to the pharmacy benefit manager (PBM). When prior authorization requirements are met, the request can often be approved without human intervention, while also creating an audit trail that can be reviewed at any point. If a request cannot be approved based on the clinical information submitted, the prescriber is prompted to complete a prior authorization request. Prior Authorization Automation delivers 18-second (median) approvals when all criteria are met for available medications.
