FTAI Aviation Ltd. (NASDAQ:FTAI) has expanded its engine exchange partnership with United Airlines (NASDAQ:UAL) through a new multi-year Maintenance, Repair and Exchange agreement covering CFM56-7B engines, according to a company announcement dated 8 October 2026.
The agreement extends the companies’ existing relationship, which previously focused on V2500-powered aircraft, and introduces an additional engine type used in United’s Boeing 737 Next Generation (NG) fleet.
Under the expanded programme, FTAI will provide United Airlines with serviceable replacement engines ahead of scheduled engine removals, allowing the carrier to maintain aircraft availability while managing maintenance requirements.
In exchange, FTAI will purchase the unserviceable engines removed from United’s aircraft and incorporate them into its maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) operations.
The arrangement is designed to reduce the operational disruption associated with traditional engine maintenance procedures while providing United with greater predictability over maintenance costs.
The expanded agreement introduces an alternative to conventional engine shop visits, which can involve significant maintenance expenses and periods when aircraft are unavailable for service.
Instead of sending an engine for maintenance and waiting for its return, United will receive a serviceable replacement before the scheduled removal of the existing engine.
FTAI will then acquire the removed engine, adding it to its inventory for use within its maintenance and overhaul network.
This approach enables United to continue operating its aircraft with less disruption while transferring responsibility for the engine’s subsequent maintenance work to FTAI.
For FTAI, the arrangement provides a continuing source of engines that can be repaired, overhauled or otherwise utilised within its existing maintenance infrastructure.
The programme also strengthens the company’s relationship with United by extending its services across a broader range of aircraft engines.
The agreement began with an initial group of CFM56-7B engines during 2026 and is structured to expand as additional engines reach their scheduled removal dates.
FTAI and United will coordinate replacement engine deliveries with the airline’s maintenance schedule, allowing the programme to develop in line with operational requirements.
The companies intend to jointly plan engine exchanges to ensure replacement units are available ahead of scheduled removals.
This coordinated approach is expected to support fleet availability while allowing FTAI to manage the flow of engines entering its MRO network.
The CFM56-7B expansion builds on the companies’ established V2500 engine exchange relationship, extending the scope of their cooperation without replacing the existing programme.
Financial terms, including the overall contract value and the number of engines expected to be exchanged during the agreement, were not disclosed.
FTAI Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Joe Adams said the agreement would help United maintain aircraft operations while improving the predictability of its maintenance expenditure.
“This agreement allows United to keep its aircraft flying and its maintenance costs predictable, while FTAI takes on the shop visit,” Adams said.
United Airlines Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer Mike Leskinen described the expanded partnership as “an important step forward” in the airline’s maintenance programme for its Boeing 737 NG fleet.
The agreement reflects United’s efforts to manage engine maintenance requirements while limiting aircraft downtime and supporting operational efficiency.
For FTAI, the expansion provides an opportunity to increase activity across its engine exchange and maintenance operations through a long-term relationship with a major US airline.
The companies will continue coordinating engine deliveries and removals as the CFM56-7B programme expands over the duration of the agreement.
