Lumentum Shares Rise 3.8% as AI Data Centre Demand Exceeds Optical Component Capacity

By Fiona Craig | October 09, 2026, 6:44 AM

Lumentum Holdings (NASDAQ:LITE) shares advanced 3.8% in premarket trading on Friday after Chief Executive Michael Hurlston indicated that strong demand for optical components used in artificial intelligence data centres had effectively committed the company’s production capacity through early 2029.

Speaking to Bloomberg Television in Tokyo, Hurlston highlighted the growing gap between demand for Lumentum’s optoelectronic products and its ability to increase manufacturing output.

The company supplies optical and laser technologies used in high-speed data transmission, making its products increasingly important as major technology companies expand their AI computing infrastructure.

Hurlston’s comments suggested that supply constraints could persist for several years despite ongoing investment in additional manufacturing facilities.

AI Infrastructure Expansion Drives Demand Beyond Available Supply

Lumentum is experiencing substantial demand for components used to support high-speed communications within and between data centres.

As technology companies invest in larger AI computing systems, requirements for faster data transmission and increased network bandwidth have accelerated.

According to Hurlston, Lumentum is currently unable to satisfy approximately 70% of demand for certain products through next year.

For other product categories, the company expects to be unable to meet around 30% of demand through 2028.

These supply gaps indicate that customer requirements are significantly exceeding available manufacturing capacity across parts of Lumentum’s portfolio.

The latest comments also represent an extension of the company’s previously indicated capacity constraints.

Approximately six months ago, Hurlston said Lumentum was on course to sell out its production capacity through 2028.

The updated outlook now extends that period into early 2029, suggesting that demand has continued to increase despite efforts to expand production.

Manufacturing Expansion Underway in United States and Japan

Lumentum is investing in additional manufacturing capacity to address the imbalance between supply and customer demand.

The company has added a fabrication facility in Greensboro, North Carolina, while also expanding production capabilities at another facility in Japan.

These investments are intended to increase output of optical and laser components used in advanced communications infrastructure.

However, Hurlston indicated that expanding production is a lengthy process.

New laser manufacturing capacity can take approximately three years to become operational and deliver products to customers.

As a result, significant additional supply from new facilities may not become available until 2029 or 2030.

The extended production timeline could maintain supply constraints over the coming years, even as manufacturers increase capital expenditure.

For Lumentum, the situation creates opportunities to secure longer-term customer demand, although the company must also manage the costs and execution risks associated with expanding its manufacturing operations.

NVIDIA Investment and Analyst Upgrade Support Investor Interest

Lumentum’s share price has also received support from developments involving major technology companies and financial analysts.

The company has benefited from a $2 billion strategic investment from NVIDIA (NASDAQ:NVDA), reflecting the importance of optical communications technology to the development of AI infrastructure.

The investment provides additional financial backing as Lumentum seeks to expand its production capabilities and address increasing customer requirements.

Separately, Stifel Nicolaus recently raised its price target for Lumentum to $1,232.

The revised target reflects a more positive assessment of the company’s growth prospects amid sustained demand for optical components.

However, the company’s ability to translate strong demand into revenue growth will depend partly on the timing of capacity additions and the successful expansion of manufacturing output.

Optical Communications Stocks Advance Across the Sector

Lumentum’s premarket gains were accompanied by advances in other companies exposed to optical communications and semiconductor technologies.

Shares in Coherent, Applied, AXT Inc., MaxLinear and Amphenol each increased by more than 3% during premarket trading.

The sector-wide movement followed a weaker session on Thursday, when several optical communications stocks declined by approximately 2% to 3% amid concerns about potential pricing pressure on optical chips.

Hurlston’s comments appeared to ease some of those concerns by highlighting continued demand for products used in AI data centre infrastructure.

However, strong demand does not necessarily eliminate pricing risks, particularly as manufacturers invest in additional capacity and competing technologies develop.

The broader US equity market also provided a more supportive backdrop.

S&P 500 and Nasdaq futures were both higher ahead of Friday’s opening session, following a decline of approximately 1.3% in the Nasdaq on October 8 as AI-related stocks came under pressure.

Lumentum Shares Approach 52-Week High

The latest advance brought Lumentum shares closer to their reported 52-week high of $1,137.20.

Investor attention remains focused on the company’s ability to increase production while maintaining profitability and meeting customer commitments.

The multi-year demand outlook suggests that optical connectivity remains an important area of investment for companies developing AI data centres.

Nevertheless, the timing of new manufacturing capacity, capital expenditure requirements and potential changes in customer spending remain important considerations.

Lumentum’s expansion in the United States and Japan is expected to play a central role in determining how much of the additional demand the company can convert into sales.

Friday’s share price increase reflected investor expectations that sustained AI infrastructure investment could support Lumentum’s growth over several years, even as manufacturing constraints limit its ability to satisfy current demand.
