All three major indexes are looking to finish the volatile week on a high note, on track to settle in the black for both the session and week. Treasury yields and the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) September meeting minutes were the headliners over the past five days, as bonds stabilized to start the week, before eventually adding pressure and sending the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJI) to a nearly 400-point deficit Wednesday afternoon. The Nasdaq Composite (IXIC) and S&P 500 Index (SPX) managed to log several record highs, before snapping their respective win streaks with a tech selloff. The 10-year note hit a 24-year high and the Fed suggested more rate hikes will come before 2026 wraps up.
Dow stocks UnitedHealth Group (UNH) and Caterpillar (CAT) are both nearing key trendlines, while AT&T (T) and other telecom stocks suffer a steep SpaceX-related slide. Meanwhile, a historic signal says Nvidia (NVDA) has more room to grow, while Nike (NKE) made its way onto our list of stocks with the most active options.
Micron Technology (MU), QXO (QXO), and Amazon.com (AMZN) all saw major market moves on both sides of the aisle after landing a slew of fresh brokerage updates. Goldman Sachs (GS) just bet big on Palantir Technologies (PLTR), while Barclays initiated coverage on Rocket Lab (RKLB).
The updates didn't end there, as Flutter Entertainment (FLUT) enjoyed a rebound after Citigroup said its latest selloff was "overblown" just after handing out a price-target hike to Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) and sending the chipmaker's shares higher.
Next week earnings will begin to pick up, with big bank stocks taking the stage alongside a handful of economic reports. Plus, here is a list of stocks to avoid in October, this flashing S&P 500 contrarian indicator tends to be reliable and Senior Market Strategist Matthew Timpane talks how investors should navigate mixed signals.
