Oshkosh Defense Begins Production of DXPV Prototype for Netherlands Military

By Fiona Craig | October 13, 2026, 6:56 AM

Oshkosh Defense, a subsidiary of Oshkosh Corporation (NYSE:OSK), has started manufacturing the first prototype of the Dutch Expeditionary Patrol Vehicle (DXPV), known as the “Kaaiman,” for the Netherlands Ministry of Defence.

The development marks a step forward in the company’s efforts to provide the Dutch armed forces with a new military patrol vehicle based on its existing Joint Light Tactical Vehicle (JLTV) platform.

According to Oshkosh Defense, the DXPV incorporates modifications designed to improve mobility, protection and operational flexibility while retaining the established engineering and manufacturing capabilities of the JLTV.

Production is taking place on the company’s existing JLTV assembly line, allowing Oshkosh to use its current manufacturing infrastructure rather than establish a separate production facility for the prototype.

DXPV Incorporates Enhanced Mobility and Protection Systems

The Dutch Expeditionary Patrol Vehicle is being developed from Oshkosh Defense’s JLTV platform, which provides the underlying architecture for the new military vehicle.

The DXPV includes several modifications intended to meet the operational requirements of the Netherlands armed forces.

These enhancements include improved mobility, upgraded suspension systems and additional corrosion protection designed for operations in maritime environments.

The vehicle also incorporates modular protection options, allowing its protective configuration to be adapted to different mission requirements.

Integrated mission systems are another feature of the DXPV, supporting its intended use in military patrol and expeditionary operations.

By incorporating these improvements into an existing vehicle platform, Oshkosh Defense aims to provide updated capabilities while reducing the development work associated with designing an entirely new vehicle.

The approach also enables the company to draw on its established manufacturing processes and experience with the JLTV programme.

Existing JLTV Production Line Supports Prototype Development

Oshkosh Defense confirmed that the DXPV prototype is being assembled on the same production line used for its Joint Light Tactical Vehicle.

The company said this manufacturing arrangement demonstrates the flexibility of its existing production infrastructure.

Jeff Heggemeier, Vice President and General Manager of Oshkosh Defense, described the start of prototype manufacturing as an important development for the Dutch programme.

“Beginning production of the DXPV prototype is an important milestone in providing the Netherlands with next-generation capabilities,” Heggemeier said.

“It highlights the benefits of an established production operation and our ability to adapt proven vehicle technologies to meet evolving customer requirements and operational missions.”

The company believes that using an active production line can help accelerate development compared with programmes that require entirely new vehicle designs and manufacturing systems.

Heggemeier also emphasised that adapting an existing platform allows Oshkosh Defense to move from the initial concept to prototype production more quickly than under conventional vehicle development schedules.

Oshkosh Also Producing Counter-Drone Vehicles

In addition to the DXPV programme, Oshkosh Defense is using its JLTV production infrastructure to manufacture vehicles designed for counter-unmanned aircraft system operations.

The company confirmed that JLTV-based Counter-Unmanned Aircraft System (C-UAS) vehicles are being produced on the same assembly line for a separate customer requirement.

These vehicles are intended to support missions involving the detection or countering of unmanned aerial threats.

The parallel production programmes demonstrate how Oshkosh Defense is adapting the JLTV platform for different military applications.

The use of a common vehicle architecture may also allow the manufacturer to apply established production processes across multiple programmes while incorporating mission-specific equipment and systems.

For Oshkosh Defense, this manufacturing flexibility supports its ability to address different customer requirements without relying exclusively on new vehicle platforms.

Netherlands Programme Advances to Prototype Manufacturing

The start of DXPV prototype production represents progress in Oshkosh Defense’s work with the Netherlands Ministry of Defence.

The Kaaiman is being developed to meet Dutch military requirements through a combination of established JLTV technology and additional operational enhancements.

The vehicle’s corrosion protection, suspension improvements and modular protection systems are among the features intended to support its use in demanding environments.

Oshkosh Defense has not provided a completion date for the prototype or announced a timetable for subsequent production stages.

The company also did not disclose financial details associated with the prototype programme in its statement.

For Oshkosh Corporation, the project demonstrates the continued application of its existing defence vehicle technology to international military requirements.

Further developments will depend on the progress of prototype manufacturing and the Netherlands Ministry of Defence’s subsequent programme decisions.
