Citigroup Inc. (NYSE:C) reported third-quarter 2026 earnings and revenue above Wall Street expectations on Tuesday, supported by growth across its Services, Markets, Banking and Wealth businesses.
The US banking group posted earnings of $2.85 per diluted share, exceeding the analyst consensus of $2.65. Revenue increased 8% year on year to $23.85 billion, compared with $22.1 billion in the corresponding quarter of 2025 and ahead of market expectations of $23.72 billion.
Net income rose to $5.2 billion from $3.8 billion a year earlier, although the prior-year figure included a $714 million after-tax goodwill impairment related to Banamex.
Excluding that charge, third-quarter 2025 net income was $4.5 billion.
Citigroup shares declined approximately 1% in pre-market trading following the announcement.
Citigroup generated revenue of $23.85 billion during the third quarter, representing an 8% increase from the previous year.
The result exceeded analysts’ consensus forecast of $23.72 billion by approximately $130 million.
Earnings per share reached $2.85, beating expectations by $0.20.
Net income increased to $5.2 billion, compared with $3.8 billion in the third quarter of 2025.
The year-earlier result included a $714 million after-tax goodwill impairment associated with Banamex, which reduced reported profitability.
Excluding that charge, net income in the prior-year quarter was $4.5 billion, indicating that Citigroup also delivered earnings growth on an adjusted comparative basis.
Chief Executive Officer Jane Fraser highlighted the bank’s revenue performance and progress in executing its strategy.
“Our performance in the quarter, which included the best third-quarter revenue in a decade, positive operating leverage and meaningful improvement in our returns, reflects the continued disciplined and consistent execution of our strategy,” Fraser said.
Citigroup’s Services division reported third-quarter revenue of $6.6 billion, representing a 15% increase year on year.
The improvement was supported by higher deposit balances and wider spreads.
Services includes activities that support corporate and institutional clients with payments, liquidity management and other financial operations.
Higher deposit balances can contribute to revenue growth by increasing the funding available to the bank, while changes in spreads influence the income generated from financial assets and liabilities.
The division’s performance was one of the main contributors to Citigroup’s overall revenue growth.
The 15% increase also demonstrated continued demand for the bank’s institutional financial services.
Citigroup reported Markets revenue of $6.1 billion during the third quarter, an increase of 6% compared with the same period last year.
The bank attributed the growth to stronger performance in both Fixed Income and Equity markets.
Fixed-income operations include trading in bonds, currencies, interest-rate products and other financial instruments.
Equity markets activities involve trading, financing and related services linked to shares and equity derivatives.
The increase across both categories contributed to higher Markets revenue despite varying trading conditions across the financial sector.
Markets remained an important contributor to Citigroup’s overall results, generating approximately one-quarter of quarterly revenue.
Citigroup’s Banking division recorded revenue growth of 6% year on year.
Within the business, investment banking revenue increased 9% to $1.4 billion.
The improvement was supported by a substantial increase in Equity Capital Markets activity, where revenue rose 77%.
Equity Capital Markets services help companies raise funding through share offerings and other equity-related transactions.
The growth indicates stronger activity in this area compared with the third quarter of 2025.
Investment banking also includes advisory and debt capital markets services, although the supplied announcement did not provide separate figures for these categories.
The increase in Banking revenue contributed to the broader improvement across Citigroup’s operating divisions.
Citigroup’s Wealth business recorded a 15% increase in revenue compared with the previous year.
The division provides investment management, financial planning and other wealth-related services to clients.
The improvement contributed to the bank’s overall revenue growth and matched the percentage increase recorded by Services.
Citigroup did not disclose the division’s total quarterly revenue or provide a detailed breakdown of its growth drivers in the supplied information.
Nevertheless, the performance demonstrated that revenue expansion extended beyond institutional banking and trading activities.
Growth across Services, Markets, Banking and Wealth supported the group’s strongest third-quarter revenue performance in a decade.
Citigroup reported operating expenses of $14.0 billion during the third quarter, representing a 2% decline from the corresponding period of 2025.
Excluding a notable item recorded in the prior-year quarter, expenses decreased 3%.
The reduction in costs occurred alongside an 8% increase in revenue, contributing to positive operating leverage.
Positive operating leverage occurs when revenue grows faster than expenses, or when revenue increases while costs decline.
The combination can support profitability by allowing a larger proportion of revenue to contribute to earnings.
Citigroup’s expense performance was therefore an important factor behind the improvement in quarterly net income.
The figures also reflected management’s focus on cost discipline as the bank continued implementing its broader strategy.
Citigroup recorded a provision for credit losses of $2.6 billion during the third quarter.
The total included $2.2 billion in net credit losses and a $369 million net increase in reserves.
The reserve build was attributed to changes in the macroeconomic outlook and growth in the bank’s portfolios.
Credit loss provisions account for expected losses on loans and other credit exposures.
Banks may increase reserves when economic expectations become less favourable or when lending growth increases their exposure to potential defaults.
The $369 million reserve build indicated that Citigroup increased its allowance for expected credit losses during the quarter.
The provision remained an important component of the bank’s earnings performance, alongside revenue growth and operating expense reductions.
Citigroup reported a Common Equity Tier 1 (CET1) capital ratio of 12.8% at the end of the third quarter.
The ratio was unchanged from the previous quarter.
CET1 measures a bank’s highest-quality regulatory capital relative to its risk-weighted assets and is a key indicator of financial resilience.
Citigroup also reported an increase in book value per share.
Book value per share rose 7% year on year to $115.61.
Tangible book value per share increased 6% to $101.59.
Tangible book value excludes certain intangible assets and is commonly used by investors to assess the underlying net asset value of banking institutions.
The increases in both measures reflected growth in shareholder equity value on a per-share basis.
Citigroup’s third-quarter results demonstrated revenue growth across its principal businesses, alongside lower operating expenses and improved profitability.
Revenue reached $23.85 billion, exceeding market expectations and representing the bank’s strongest third-quarter performance in ten years.
Earnings per share of $2.85 also surpassed the analyst consensus of $2.65.
Services and Wealth each reported 15% revenue growth, while Markets and Banking both increased 6%.
Operating expenses declined to $14.0 billion, supporting positive operating leverage.
However, the $2.6 billion provision for credit losses highlighted the continued importance of credit conditions and the economic outlook.
For investors, Citigroup’s future performance will depend partly on institutional client activity, capital markets conditions, lending quality and continued cost management.
The bank’s unchanged CET1 ratio of 12.8% and higher book values provided additional measures of its financial position as management continued executing its strategy.
