The Bank of New York Mellon Corporation (NYSE:BNY) reported third-quarter earnings and revenue above analysts’ expectations on Thursday, supported by growth in fee income, higher net interest income and increased assets under custody and administration.
Despite the stronger-than-expected results, BNY shares declined 1.58% in pre-market trading as investors assessed the bank’s operating expenses, profitability margins and capital position.
Adjusted earnings per share reached $2.37, exceeding the consensus estimate of $2.26 by $0.11.
Quarterly revenue increased 12% year-on-year to $5.68 billion, compared with $5.08 billion in the corresponding period last year. The result also surpassed analysts’ expectations of $5.55 billion.
The company reported earnings per share growth of 24%, reflecting improved profitability across its financial services businesses.
BNY’s third-quarter revenue growth was driven by gains across its operating platforms, including higher fee income and increased net interest income.
Fee revenue rose 12% compared with the previous year to $4.08 billion, reflecting growth across the company’s financial services activities.
Net interest income increased 15% year-on-year to $1.42 billion, providing an additional contribution to total revenue.
The results demonstrated continued demand for BNY’s custody, administration, investment management and related financial services.
Chief Executive Officer Robin Vince highlighted the contribution from the company’s operating platforms and the improvement in earnings.
“BNY delivered strong results in the third quarter. With broad-based growth across our platforms, we increased revenue by 12% year-over-year, delivering significant operating leverage and earnings per share growth of 24%,” Vince said.
The combination of higher fee revenue and stronger net interest income helped BNY exceed market forecasts for both earnings and revenue.
BNY generated a pre-tax margin of 39% during the third quarter, alongside a return on tangible common equity of 29%.
The profitability measures reflected the company’s ability to generate earnings from its revenue base and shareholders’ tangible equity.
However, operating expenses also increased during the period.
Total noninterest expense rose 8% year-on-year to $3.49 billion, reflecting higher revenue-related costs and continued investment in the business.
BNY said the increase was partially offset by savings generated through efficiency initiatives.
Although expenses grew more slowly than revenue, the rise in operating costs remained an important consideration for investors assessing the sustainability of the company’s profitability.
The company’s 39% pre-tax margin provided an indication of current operating performance, while future margins will depend partly on its ability to balance investment spending with revenue growth and efficiency improvements.
BNY reported a 10% year-on-year increase in assets under custody and administration, bringing the total to $63.4 trillion at the end of the third quarter.
The increase reflected growth in the scale of assets serviced through the company’s custody and administration platforms.
Assets under management also increased, rising 2% compared with the previous year to $2.2 trillion.
The two measures represent different aspects of BNY’s business.
Assets under custody and administration include client assets for which the company provides safekeeping, administration and related services, while assets under management represent portfolios managed through its investment management operations.
Growth in these balances can support fee-generating activity, although revenue is also influenced by pricing, asset mix, client activity and market conditions.
The reported increases reinforced the contribution of BNY’s asset servicing and investment management businesses to its overall financial performance.
BNY returned approximately $1.4 billion to common shareholders during the third quarter through dividends and share repurchases.
The total included $436 million in common stock dividends and $937 million in share buybacks.
The company ended the quarter with a common equity tier 1 (CET1) capital ratio of 10.9%, compared with 11.0% in the preceding quarter.
The CET1 ratio is a key regulatory measure of a bank’s capital strength and its ability to absorb potential losses.
Although the ratio declined by 10 basis points sequentially, it remained an important indicator of BNY’s capital position following its shareholder distributions.
BNY’s third-quarter results showed broad-based revenue growth, higher earnings and an increase in assets under custody and administration.
Adjusted earnings exceeded expectations, while revenue growth of 12% outpaced the 8% increase in noninterest expenses.
However, the company’s shares moved lower in pre-market trading despite the earnings beat, suggesting that investors were also weighing operating costs, profitability margins and the modest sequential decline in its CET1 capital ratio.
The results highlighted BNY’s continued ability to generate earnings growth across its financial services platforms.
Looking ahead, investors will be monitoring whether the company can sustain revenue momentum while controlling expenses, maintaining profitability margins and supporting further capital returns.
