Truist Financial Shares Fall 2.53% as Third-Quarter Revenue Misses Estimates Despite Earnings Beat

By Fiona Craig | October 16, 2026, 6:57 AM

Truist Financial Corporation (NYSE:TFC) shares declined 2.53% in premarket trading on Friday, 16 October 2026, after the US banking group reported third-quarter earnings above analyst expectations but revenue below consensus forecasts.

The Charlotte-based lender posted adjusted earnings per share of $1.16 for the quarter ended 30 September 2026, exceeding analysts’ estimates of $1.14.

However, taxable-equivalent revenue totalled $3.79 billion, compared with a consensus forecast of $5.35 billion, reflecting the impact of losses associated with securities and loan portfolio transactions.

Truist reported adjusted net income available to common shareholders of $1.42 billion, compared with $1.35 billion in the corresponding period last year.

The results reflected a combination of improved interest income, portfolio restructuring and measures intended to strengthen the bank’s balance sheet.

Securities and Loan Sales Weigh on Reported Revenue

Truist reported revenue of $3.75 billion for the third quarter, below market expectations following losses associated with the sale of financial assets.

The bank recorded a $1.45 billion loss on the disposal of available-for-sale securities, alongside a $66 million loss related to the sale of its Regional Acceptance Corporation (RAC) loan portfolio.

These transactions contributed to a 27.8% year-on-year decline in reported revenue when the securities losses were included.

Excluding the identified transaction-related losses, adjusted revenue reached $5.30 billion, representing a 0.1% decline compared with the second quarter.

The difference between reported and adjusted revenue highlights the effect of Truist’s portfolio restructuring activities on its quarterly financial statements.

Although the disposals reduced reported revenue, the bank said the transactions were intended to improve its risk, liquidity and funding position.

Adjusted Earnings Exceed Analyst Expectations

Truist reported adjusted earnings per share of $1.16, exceeding the consensus estimate of $1.14 by $0.02.

Adjusted net income available to common shareholders reached $1.42 billion, compared with $1.35 billion a year earlier.

The bank reported a 12% increase in adjusted net income, although the stated quarterly figures indicate a smaller increase when compared directly.

The earnings performance came despite the revenue shortfall and transaction-related losses recognised during the period.

Chief Executive Officer Mike Lyons highlighted the company’s financial performance and strategic actions.

“We delivered a solid quarter while also taking decisive actions to better position Truist for the future,” Lyons said.

“These actions strengthen our risk, liquidity, and funding profile and create greater capacity to invest in our best businesses.”

The comments followed several portfolio transactions aimed at adjusting Truist’s exposure to selected lending activities.

Net Interest Income Rises as Margin Reaches 3.00%

Truist reported taxable-equivalent net interest income of $3.71 billion during the third quarter.

The figure represented an increase of 1.1% from the preceding quarter and 0.7% compared with the same period in 2025.

The bank’s net interest margin expanded by two basis points to 3.00%.

Net interest margin measures the difference between the interest income generated from earning assets and the interest expense associated with funding those assets, expressed relative to average interest-earning assets.

The improvement indicates that Truist generated a slightly higher margin from its interest-earning activities during the quarter.

The increase in net interest income provided support to the bank’s underlying financial performance, partially offsetting the effects of lower adjusted revenue and portfolio disposals.

Truist Completes Regional Acceptance Corporation Loan Sale

During the third quarter, Truist completed the sale of its Regional Acceptance Corporation loan portfolio.

The transaction resulted in a $66 million loss and formed part of the bank’s efforts to adjust its lending exposure and risk profile.

The disposal also contributed to changes in the bank’s reported asset quality measures.

Following the sale, nonperforming loans declined to 0.40% of total loans, compared with 0.51% in the preceding quarter.

The reduction indicates a lower proportion of loans classified as nonperforming at the end of the reporting period.

However, the improvement was influenced by the removal of the RAC portfolio rather than solely by changes in credit performance across the remaining loan book.

The bank reported a net charge-off ratio of 0.77% for the quarter.

This included 39 basis points associated with RAC, indicating that the disposed portfolio made a substantial contribution to the reported charge-off rate.

Truist Agrees to Sell $7.7 Billion LightStream Loan Portfolio to Carlyle

In a further portfolio restructuring measure, Truist signed an agreement on 14 October to sell $7.7 billion of unsecured consumer loans originated through its LightStream platform.

The buyer is Carlyle Group Inc., an investment management firm.

The agreement follows the completion of the RAC loan portfolio sale and represents another step in Truist’s efforts to reshape its consumer lending exposure.

Unsecured consumer loans are not backed by specific collateral, making credit performance and borrower repayment capacity important considerations for lenders.

The proposed transaction is expected to reduce Truist’s direct exposure to the loans included in the sale once completed.

The announcement did not specify the expected completion date or provide detailed financial terms beyond the size of the portfolio.

Average Loans Decline While Deposits Increase

Truist reported a reduction in average loans and leases held for investment during the third quarter.

Average balances declined 1.1% to $325.5 billion, reflecting changes in the bank’s lending portfolio.

Meanwhile, average deposits increased 1.4% to $410.7 billion.

The increase in deposits occurred alongside the bank’s efforts to strengthen its liquidity and funding position.

Deposit balances represent an important source of funding for banking operations, while loan balances provide information about lending activity and the size of the institution’s credit portfolio.

The contrasting movements in loans and deposits reflect the bank’s ongoing balance sheet adjustments.

Asset Quality Measures Improve Following Portfolio Disposal

Truist’s reported nonperforming loan ratio declined to 0.40% from 0.51% in the second quarter.

The improvement followed the disposal of the Regional Acceptance Corporation portfolio, which affected the composition of the bank’s remaining loan book.

At the same time, the net charge-off ratio stood at 0.77%, including 39 basis points attributable to RAC.

The figures demonstrate the importance of distinguishing between underlying credit performance and changes resulting from asset disposals.

The bank’s portfolio restructuring activities may continue to influence reported credit metrics as additional transactions are completed.

Investors will be assessing how the remaining lending portfolio performs following these changes.

Investors Assess Revenue Shortfall and Balance Sheet Restructuring

Truist’s third-quarter results presented a mixed financial picture, with adjusted earnings exceeding expectations while reported revenue fell below consensus estimates.

The bank generated higher net interest income and expanded its net interest margin to 3.00%, while adjusted net income available to common shareholders reached $1.42 billion.

However, the $1.45 billion securities loss and $66 million RAC loan sale loss had a substantial effect on reported revenue.

The company’s ongoing portfolio adjustments, including the planned $7.7 billion LightStream loan sale, remain important developments for investors evaluating its future earnings and balance sheet composition.

Truist shares declined 2.53% in premarket trading following the announcement, with market attention focused on the revenue shortfall and the implications of its restructuring programme.
