Central Banks Pressure Asian Markets

Asian markets finished lower across the board on Thursday as technology stocks remained under pressure. South Korea's central bank held interest rates steady at 3% after two consecutive hikes, as inflation remained elevated and President Lee Jae Myung called for increased housing supply. Foreign investment in China declined 4.3% year over year during the first three quarters, while outbound non-financial direct investment reached $101 billion. The Shanghai Composite fell 1.5%, while Japan’s Nikkei dropped 2.7% as investors continued selling foreign bonds for a fifth consecutive week, marking the longest such streak in four years. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng and South Korea’s Kospi also slid, losing 3% and 3.3%, respectively.

European markets were also under pressure, with rising oil prices weighing on investor sentiment. French borrowing costs climbed to a fresh 24-year high Thursday, with the country's 10-year bond yield topping 5% amid political unrest. The French CAC 40 was last seen down 1.3%, while London’s FTSE 100 and the German DAX fall 0.3% and 0.8%, respectively.
