Honeywell Deploys Industrial AI Platform at Dangote Refinery in Nigeria

By Fiona Craig | October 26, 2026, 9:49 AM

Honeywell Technologies (NASDAQ:HON) has launched Forge Plant Cognition, an artificial intelligence platform designed for industrial operations, with its first deployment at Dangote’s petroleum refinery in Lekki, Nigeria.

The platform combines Honeywell’s industrial technology with AI and accelerated computing capabilities from NVIDIA (NASDAQ:NVDA) and infrastructure supplied by Dell Technologies (NYSE:DELL).

According to Honeywell, the system is designed to analyse refinery operating data, identify equipment issues and recommend adjustments intended to improve plant performance.

The company estimates that the technology could generate more than $60 million in annual gross operational benefits at the Lekki facility when operating at full capacity, although the projected benefits have not been independently demonstrated and are not guaranteed.

Honeywell Estimates Operational Benefits of More Than $60 Million Annually

Honeywell’s preliminary calculations indicate that Forge Plant Cognition could deliver operational benefits exceeding $0.29 per barrel processed at the Dangote refinery.

At full operating capacity, the company estimates that these improvements could translate into more than $60 million in gross annual operational benefits.

The figures are specific to the Lekki refinery and are based on Honeywell’s initial assessment of potential performance improvements.

The company emphasised that the estimates are not guaranteed and exclude the costs associated with implementing the platform.

Actual financial outcomes will depend on operating conditions, the effectiveness of the technology and the expenses required for deployment and maintenance.

The projected benefits are intended to reflect potential improvements in refinery efficiency rather than confirmed financial savings.

Dangote Refinery Capacity Expansion Plans

The Dangote petroleum refinery in Lekki is described as one of the world’s largest single-train refining facilities.

Its current stated processing capacity is 650,000 barrels of crude oil per day.

Honeywell and Dangote previously announced plans to expand the facility’s capacity to 1.4 million barrels per day over a three-year period.

The proposed expansion would increase the refinery’s processing capabilities and associated operational requirements.

The introduction of Forge Plant Cognition forms part of the companies’ efforts to apply digital technology to refinery operations as the facility develops.

The platform is intended to support engineers and operators in monitoring plant performance and identifying potential operating adjustments.

NVIDIA AI Models and Dell Infrastructure Support the Platform

Forge Plant Cognition incorporates several technologies developed by NVIDIA.

The platform uses NVIDIA Nemotron open models to interpret industrial operating data and provide information relevant to refinery processes.

NVIDIA Omniverse libraries are used to develop a digital twin, creating a virtual representation of plant operations that can be used to analyse processes and equipment performance.

The system also incorporates NVIDIA Cosmos models and the NVIDIA Metropolis Video Search and Summarisation (VSS) Blueprint to support real-time detection of operational anomalies.

Dell AI Factory with NVIDIA provides the underlying computing infrastructure, supported by Dell Services.

Together, these technologies are intended to enable the platform to process operational information and identify conditions requiring attention.

Platform Designed to Identify Equipment Issues and Operating Constraints

Honeywell developed Forge Plant Cognition to support decision-making across industrial facilities.

The system is designed to identify operational bottlenecks that may limit production efficiency and detect potential equipment problems.

It can also recommend corrective actions based on the information collected from refinery operations.

Another function involves incorporating industrial process knowledge into AI-supported workflows for engineers and plant operators.

The objective is to make operational information more accessible and support the evaluation of potential adjustments to equipment and production processes.

The platform’s effectiveness will depend on the quality of operating data, implementation and its integration with existing refinery systems.

Dangote Links AI Deployment to Workforce Development

David Bird, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals FZE, said the company selected the platform because of its combination of industrial knowledge and artificial intelligence capabilities.

The deployment is also intended to support Dangote’s objective of developing a workforce in which 70% of employees are Nigerian.

The company expects the technology to provide engineers and operators with access to digital tools and process information as part of its operational development.

Rajesh Gattupalli, President of Honeywell Technologies UOP, said the collaboration with Dangote is intended to demonstrate how artificial intelligence can be applied to large-scale industrial operations.

The companies have not disclosed a financial value for the technology deployment.

Honeywell Expands Industrial AI Applications

The launch of Forge Plant Cognition at the Dangote refinery represents an application of AI technology to petroleum refining operations.

The platform combines industrial process data, digital twin technology and automated analysis to support operational monitoring and decision-making.

Honeywell’s preliminary estimates indicate potential financial benefits at the Lekki site, but the actual results will depend on implementation costs and the operational improvements achieved.

The deployment also forms part of the broader collaboration between Honeywell and Dangote as the refinery pursues its capacity expansion plans.

The information is based on a press release issued by Honeywell Technologies.
