Disappointing earnings from Alphabet (GOOGL) and Caterpillar (CAT) weighed on Wall Street today, with the former marking its worst day ever. The Nasdaq suffered a 365-point loss, while the S&P 500 and Dow finished in the red as well, all snapping three-day winning streaks. Small caps bucked the broader-market trend, however, with the Russell 2000 (RUT) securing its fourth straight win and eighth gain in the last nine sessions.
Elsewhere, the S&P 500 healthcare sector hit a fresh record high, boosted by strong earnings from Eli Lilly (LLY) and Merck (MRK). Investors also unpacked the Federal Reserve's preferred inflation gauge, the PCE price index, which rose in September but came in largely in line with expectations.
