NVIDIA Corp. (NASDAQ:NVDA) CEO Jensen Huang said the AI infrastructure buildout, currently costing a few hundred billion dollars, could eventually reach trillions, emphasizing that the effort is still in its early stages.
"We have only just begun this buildout," wrote Huang in a blog post titled AI Is A 5-Layer Cake on Tuesday. "We are a few hundred billion dollars into it. Trillions of dollars of infrastructure still need to be built."
Applications, Models, Infrastructure, Chips, and Energy are the five layers of AI infrastructure, as per Huang.
Explaining the phenomenon, Huang said, AI factories, redesigned chips, and energy optimization are driving a large-scale AI buildout, as applications become practical at scale and each layer amplifies the others. “This is why the buildout is so large.”
Hyperscale AI Spending Climbs
Nvidia's GPUs power hyperscale AI data centers, while tech giants including Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOGL) (NASDAQ:GOOG), Amazon.com (NASDAQ:AMZN), Meta Platforms (NASDAQ:META), and Microsoft Corp. (NASDAQ:MSFT) are investing up to $700 billion this year in U.S. infrastructure, with major buildouts in Virginia, Georgia, and Pennsylvania.
During Nvidia’s Q4 earnings call, BofA analyst Vivek Arya questioned whether cloud providers could sustain the massive capex amid tightening cash flows. Huang countered, emphasizing that AI demand represents a structural shift: "In this new world of AI, compute equals revenues," meaning that without computing power, revenue growth is impossible.
Meanwhile, Gene Munster of Deepwater Asset Management said next year's Big Tech capital spending will be "meaningfully higher" than Wall Street expects, citing the White House's new Ratepayer Protection Pledge as a major factor. He later stated that he expects the big tech capex to rise by roughly 65% in 2026.
AI Infrastructure Boosts Jobs, Says Huang
Huang notes that the AI infrastructure boom is creating “enormous” demand for skilled workers, electricians, plumbers, pipefitters, steelworkers, network technicians, and operators, roles previously seen as safe from AI disruption.
Huang envisions AI as a workforce enhancer, boosting human capabilities rather than replacing traditional jobs. "A radiologist's purpose is to care for patients," the CEO wrote. "When AI takes on more of the routine work, radiologists can focus on judgment, communication, and care. Hospitals become more productive. They serve more patients. They hire more people."
Previously, the Nvidia CEO warned that widespread AI adoption could cause job losses only if industries don't continue to innovate. In a CNN interview, he emphasized that sustaining employment depends on generating new ideas, noting that without them, productivity gains from AI could lead to fewer jobs.
