New Tool Targets Sophisticated Automated Traffic
Cloudflare, Inc. (NYSE:NET) has introduced the general availability of Precursor, a new bot management solution designed to identify automated activity by monitoring behaviour throughout an entire browsing session rather than relying on a single security checkpoint.
The company said the launch addresses the growing sophistication of malicious bots, which are increasingly capable of bypassing traditional website protection measures.
Bot Traffic Now Exceeds Human Activity
According to Cloudflare, automated traffic now represents approximately 57% of all web requests, meaning bots generate more internet activity than human users.
The company noted that conventional tools such as CAPTCHAs typically evaluate visitors at only one point during a session, creating opportunities for advanced bots to evade detection.
Behavioural Analysis Runs Continuously
Precursor operates directly within the user’s web browser, gathering behavioural signals such as mouse movements, scrolling patterns, typing cadence, clipboard interactions and the amount of time a page remains visible.
Cloudflare said the platform records aggregated behavioural trends rather than capturing personal information. For example, keyboard activity is measured by typing rhythm rather than recording individual keystrokes.
The company added that the feature can be activated with a single click and does not require customers to modify existing website code.
Real-Time Scoring Improves Detection
Cloudflare’s servers continuously analyse the collected telemetry and update each visitor’s Bot Score throughout the browsing session.
By evaluating behaviour in real time, the company said automated agents cannot erase or reset their activity profile simply by refreshing a webpage.
Cloudflare Aims to Close Security Gap
Commenting on the launch, Chief Technology Officer Dane Knecht said: “Traditional security checks look at a single moment in time, but modern bots have gotten smart enough to fake their way through the front door.”
He added: “With Precursor, we’re now eliminating that blindspot.”
