Stock rises following report on potential transaction

Shares of Carlyle Group Inc. (NASDAQ:CG) moved higher in pre-market trading on Tuesday after a report indicated the private equity firm is exploring a deal involving its investment in sustainability consultancy Anthesis Group.

According to Bloomberg, Carlyle is in discussions to transfer control of Anthesis to Bridgepoint Group Plc through its private credit business. The news sent Carlyle shares up 3.2% before the opening bell.

Anthesis investment dates back to 2023

Carlyle acquired a majority interest in the London-based sustainability advisory firm through its European private equity platform in 2023.

The transaction valued Anthesis at approximately £400 million, or about $538 million at the time. Bloomberg reported that Bridgepoint Credit helped finance the acquisition by providing a private loan.

ESG consulting sector faces a more challenging environment

The reported negotiations come as the environmental, social and governance consulting industry experiences slower momentum than in previous years.

Demand for ESG advisory services expanded rapidly during the early 2020s as companies accelerated net-zero commitments and sustainability initiatives. However, the sector has since faced growing political scrutiny and a more difficult operating backdrop, creating additional challenges for consultants operating in the space.
