IMAX shares rise after second-quarter earnings surpass expectations (NYSE:IMAX)

IMAX Corporation (NYSE:IMAX) reported stronger-than-expected second-quarter results on Thursday, sending its shares more than 7% higher in premarket trading as record box office performance and network expansion boosted revenue and profitability.

The cinema technology company benefited from the exceptional global debut of Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, which delivered one of the strongest IMAX openings on record.

Earnings and revenue beat Wall Street forecasts

IMAX reported adjusted earnings of $0.43 per share for the second quarter, exceeding analysts’ consensus estimate of $0.33.

Revenue rose 12% year over year to $103 million, comfortably ahead of market expectations of $96.45 million and up from $91.7 million in the same period last year.

Following the earnings release, the company’s shares gained more than 7% in premarket trading.

Blockbuster film drives record IMAX performance

The company’s quarterly results were supported by the launch of Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, which generated $52 million at the global box office during its opening weekend.

The film accounted for approximately 20% of worldwide ticket sales and, according to IMAX, achieved the highest international market share ever recorded by the company for a major theatrical release.

Chief Executive Officer Rich Gelfond said, “We are very pleased with our strong results for the second quarter — in which we handily beat consensus estimates across key financial metrics — and look forward to building on our momentum to deliver global box office growth, network expansion worldwide, new opportunities for our brand and continued value for our shareholders.”

Profitability continues to improve

Net income attributable to common shareholders increased 36% from a year earlier to $15.4 million, while diluted earnings per share rose to $0.27 from $0.20.

The company reported a net profit margin of 15.5%, alongside an adjusted EBITDA margin of 46.6%, reflecting continued operating leverage.

Global network expansion accelerates

IMAX installed 38 new systems during the second quarter, marking its strongest second-quarter installation performance in ten years.

The additions increased the company’s global commercial network to 1,809 systems.

Outside China, IMAX expanded its international network by 9% compared with the previous year.

Cash generated from operating activities reached $36 million during the first half of 2026, representing a 19% increase year over year and highlighting continued strength in the company’s cash generation.
