The company plans to seek a re-examination after the European regulator’s advisory committee issued a negative opinion on arimoclomol for Niemann-Pick disease type C.
Zevra Therapeutics (NASDAQ:ZVRA) announced that the Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use (CHMP) of the European Medicines Agency adopted a negative opinion on the Marketing Authorization Application for arimoclomol as a treatment for Niemann-Pick disease type C (NPC).
The company said it plans to request a re-examination of the opinion and submit a detailed explanation supporting its position, in line with European regulatory procedures.
While the application did not receive a positive recommendation, Zevra stated it remains committed to pursuing regulatory pathways to bring arimoclomol to patients in Europe. The company also continues to provide access through its global Expanded Access Program, which supports eligible patients and generates additional real-world clinical evidence.
A negative CHMP opinion represents a regulatory setback that could delay Zevra’s plans to expand arimoclomol into the European market. Since Europe represents a potential commercial opportunity for rare disease therapies, any delay in regulatory approval may affect the timing of future geographic expansion.
However, the regulatory process has not concluded. By requesting a re-examination, Zevra retains an opportunity to challenge the opinion and seek a different outcome. The company’s continued Expanded Access Program and collection of real-world evidence may also support its broader regulatory strategy, although the outcome of the review remains uncertain.
The announcement leaves investors focused on whether the company can ultimately secure European approval while continuing to execute its commercial strategy in markets where arimoclomol is already available.
