Synopsys, Inc. (NASDAQ:SNPS) has announced two new autonomous electronic design automation (EDA) workflows created in partnership with Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) and currently being evaluated by AMD (NASDAQ:AMD), with both solutions now available through Microsoft Discovery.

The announcement was made during the 2026 DAC Chips to Systems Conference, where the companies showcased what they described as the first EDA applications available for assessment on the Microsoft Discovery platform.

New AI-powered workflows target faster chip development

The first workflow introduces a fully autonomous debug closure system that combines domain-specific and task-oriented AI agents to detect design failures and automate debugging processes. Initial testing has shown the technology can shorten debug cycle times by between 25% and 40%.

The second workflow focuses on autonomous implementation and design closure, using Synopsys’ Fusion Compiler running on Microsoft Azure to automatically optimize quality-of-results tuning. Early evaluations indicate the workflow delivers improved implementation results.

Both solutions are built on Synopsys’ AgentEngineer technology, and the company said customers interested in testing the new capabilities can request evaluation access.

AMD evaluates workflows for future products

AMD confirmed it is actively assessing both workflows as part of the development of its next generation of semiconductor products.

“AI driven workflows powered by Discovery and leveraging AI tooling, such as RCA with deep EDA domain knowledge, are a paradigm we see accelerating scaling and deployment, helping improve both design velocity and overall silicon quality,” said Alex Starr, AMD Corporate Fellow.

Expanding the use of agentic AI in chip design

Aseem Datar, Corporate Vice President of Product Innovation for Microsoft Discovery and Quantum, said Microsoft is “excited about Synopsys’ open, interoperable approach to their agentic platform” and the collaborative effort to make these workflows the first available on Discovery.

The latest announcement builds on an earlier collaboration between the companies that introduced an agentic specification-to-RTL workflow. According to Synopsys, the newly launched capabilities extend the role of agentic artificial intelligence beyond individual task automation to support longer-running engineering execution throughout the semiconductor design process.
