The new patent allowance expands intellectual property protection around Creative Medical’s diabetes pipeline while supporting its strategy across cell-based and cell-free immunotherapy platforms.
Creative Medical Technology Holdings (NASDAQ:CELZ) announced that the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has issued a Notice of Allowance for a patent application covering the use of exosomes derived from stem cell-programmed myeloid cells to treat Type 1 diabetes.
Once formally issued, the patent will extend protection for the company’s MyeloCelz™ platform, a cell-free technology designed to induce antigen-specific immune tolerance and reduce the autoimmune destruction of insulin-producing pancreatic beta cells.
According to the company, the newly allowed patent complements its broader diabetes portfolio, which includes CELZ-201 (AlloStem®), currently being evaluated in the FDA-cleared CREATE-1 trial for newly diagnosed Type 1 diabetes, and CELZ-101 (ImmCelz®), which has received FDA Orphan Drug Designation for use alongside pancreatic islet transplantation.
Creative Medical said its intellectual property estate now includes approximately 60 issued patents and pending applications, including seven issued U.S. patents and 39 pending U.S. patent applications.
For clinical-stage biotechnology companies, intellectual property is a key component of long-term value creation because it can help protect future commercial opportunities and strengthen competitive positioning.
The latest patent allowance expands protection beyond the company’s existing cell-based therapies by adding coverage for a complementary cell-free approach. This may provide greater strategic flexibility as Creative Medical advances multiple programmes targeting Type 1 diabetes through different therapeutic mechanisms.
The company also indicated that the expanded patent estate could support future licensing or partnership discussions, although no agreements have been announced.
While the intellectual property development strengthens the company’s platform, the commercial value of these assets will ultimately depend on continued clinical progress, regulatory development and successful execution of its ongoing programmes.
