French media organisations have asked France’s competition regulator to intervene over Google’s (NASDAQ:GOOG) use of artificial intelligence to generate summaries of news articles, according to a press trade association body.
The publishers argue that Google’s AI-generated summaries are reducing the number of users clicking through to their websites, potentially weakening an important source of traffic for traditional media companies.
Publishers seek regulatory action
The media groups want the French antitrust authority to take action against Google over the impact of its AI summaries on publishers.
They are seeking an outcome similar to a July ruling involving Meta, under which the company was required to propose a payment framework and resume negotiations with traditional media organisations.
The complaint adds to the pressure surrounding the relationship between major technology platforms and news publishers as AI-generated answers increasingly provide users with information directly within search and other digital services.
For Google, the dispute creates another regulatory issue in France as publishers seek to protect the traffic generated by their content and establish how media companies should be compensated when technology platforms use their material in AI-powered services.
