Meta Platforms Inc. (NASDAQ:META) has become one of Microsoft Corp.’s (NASDAQ:MSFT) largest customers for artificial intelligence services, according to a Bloomberg News report, highlighting the substantial infrastructure spending required to support the technology sector’s AI expansion.

The Facebook and Instagram parent is reportedly spending hundreds of millions of dollars each year to access artificial intelligence models through Microsoft’s Azure cloud computing platform.

Meta’s AI spending strengthens Microsoft cloud relationship

The scale of Meta’s spending illustrates the growing importance of external cloud infrastructure even among technology companies investing heavily in their own artificial intelligence capabilities.

Microsoft has positioned Azure as a major platform for businesses seeking access to the computing capacity and AI models required to develop and operate increasingly sophisticated applications.

Meta’s emergence as a significant Azure AI customer therefore represents another potentially important source of demand for Microsoft’s cloud operations.

AI demand remains concentrated among technology giants

The arrangement also demonstrates how a substantial portion of current artificial intelligence spending continues to originate within the technology industry itself.

Major technology groups are committing significant capital to computing infrastructure, AI models and data centres as competition intensifies to develop new consumer and enterprise applications.

Meta’s reported annual spending of hundreds of millions of dollars with Microsoft provides another example of the financial relationships developing between some of the world’s largest technology companies as the AI infrastructure market expands.
