IBM Unveils Dual-Architecture Mainframe Processor With Native Arm Support

IBM (NYSE:IBM) has unveiled a new dual-architecture mainframe processor designed to support both IBM and Arm computing environments on future IBM Z and LinuxONE systems.

Presented at the Hot Chips conference, the processor represents the first major development to emerge from the collaboration between IBM and Arm announced in April 2026. The technology is intended to allow organisations to operate Arm-native Linux environments alongside z/OS and Linux on IBM Z infrastructure.

New IBM Chip Built on 2-Nanometre Technology

The processor will be manufactured using a 2-nanometre technology node and feature 11 high-performance cores capable of operating at frequencies above 5.7 GHz.

Each individual core is being designed to execute both Arm and IBM Z instructions, or Arm and LinuxONE instructions, natively and concurrently. This approach could allow enterprises to combine workloads from different computing architectures within the same mainframe environment.

IBM Z and LinuxONE systems are designed to scale to hundreds of processor cores and tens of terabytes of memory, making them central infrastructure for organisations running large and mission-critical workloads.

AI Accelerators and Dedicated I/O Processing Included

Beyond its dual-architecture capabilities, IBM’s new processor will incorporate dedicated technologies aimed at artificial intelligence and data-intensive workloads.

The chip will include AI inference accelerators designed to support functions such as fraud detection during transactions. It will also feature a dedicated on-chip data processing unit intended to accelerate input/output operations, alongside a large cache architecture.

These capabilities are designed to strengthen the processor’s performance for enterprise workloads where rapid data processing, security and reliability are critical.

IBM and Arm Target Broader Enterprise Software Ecosystem

“This processor represents a significant architectural advancement for IBM Z and LinuxONE,” said Christian Jacobi, Chief Technology Officer and IBM Fellow, IBM Systems Development. “By bringing Arm natively to our platform, we’re combining access to one of the industry’s fastest-growing software ecosystems with the qualities that have made IBM systems the foundation for how businesses run today.”

The integration could give IBM customers access to a wider range of Arm-native applications while retaining the reliability and scalability associated with IBM’s mainframe platforms.

Mohamed Awad, Executive Vice President of Cloud AI at Arm, said introducing Arm compute capabilities and its software ecosystem to IBM Z and LinuxONE would extend the architecture’s momentum “into mission-critical enterprise infrastructure to give organizations greater choice in how they deploy AI.”

Dual Architecture Could Expand IBM Z and LinuxONE Flexibility

The processor represents an important step in IBM’s effort to broaden the range of workloads that can run natively on its enterprise computing platforms.

Combining Arm compatibility with IBM’s established architecture could provide businesses with greater flexibility when deploying cloud-native applications, Linux workloads and artificial intelligence technologies alongside traditional mission-critical systems.
