Lumen extends Multi-Cloud Gateway access to more than 10 million US business sites

By Fiona Craig | August 26, 2026, 6:26 AM

Lumen Technologies (NYSE:LUMN) has broadened the reach of its Multi-Cloud Gateway service, enabling enterprises to connect more than 10 million business locations across the US to private cloud networking, including sites outside the company’s own fibre network.

The expansion allows eligible locations connected through third-party networks to access the same cloud networking environment available to Lumen on-net customers. The move significantly increases the number of sites businesses can incorporate into their cloud infrastructure without requiring them to redesign their existing network architecture.

Enterprises gain wider access to programmable cloud networking

Customers can manage Multi-Cloud Gateway through the Lumen Connect portal and APIs, giving enterprises the ability to apply routing policies, network segmentation and digital management capabilities across a larger number of locations.

The expanded coverage is designed to support organisations adopting artificial intelligence and multi-cloud strategies that require consistent connectivity across offices, facilities and other business sites.

“AI and multi-cloud strategies work best if the network can reach every part of the business,” said Jim Fowler, chief technology and product officer at Lumen. “By extending Multi-Cloud Gateway beyond our fiber footprint, we’re making it easier for enterprises to connect more locations to a programmable, cloud-ready network without redesigning their architecture.”

Lumen targets consistent connectivity across multiple locations

Peter Chahal, research director at IDC, said the growing complexity of multi-cloud environments means businesses increasingly need consistent network performance across their entire operations.

He noted that the challenge for enterprises expanding across several cloud platforms “is no longer simply connecting cloud environments,” but rather “extending the same secure, high-performance networking experience to every location where business happens.”

Lumen’s expanded Multi-Cloud Gateway service is available through Ethernet Fabric Connect within the Lumen Connect portal and can also be accessed through API integration.

Customers can check whether individual locations qualify for the service through the Lumen Connect platform or their Lumen account team.
