September has historically been a difficult month for stocks, making names with a track record of outperformance particularly noteworthy as Wall Street kicks off the final stretch of the third quarter.
Per Schaeffer’s Senior Quantitative Analyst Rocky White, Intel (INTC) is among the best S&P 500 stocks to own in September over the last 10 years. INTC averages a monthly gain of 4.6% -- the highest average return of any stock on the list -- with a 70% win rate over that period.
A move of similar magnitude from INTC's current perch at $88.96 would put the shares at $93.05. The shares have also pulled back to solid support at the 140-day moving average.
Furthermore, Intel stock has more than doubled this year, up 141% since the beginning of 2026, despite little love from analysts. In fact, 35 of the 45 firms in coverage rate the equity a "hold" or worse. Another study by White highlights this disparity as a contrarian bullish signal.
It's worth noting that options are reasonably priced at the moment too. INTC's Schaeffer's Volatility Index (SVI) of 54% ranks in the 23rd percentile of its annual range, meaning options traders are pricing in low volatility expectations.
