InterDigital (NASDAQ:IDCC) has secured a third Disney (NYSE:DIS) injunction from the Unified Patent Court, extending its record of successful patent enforcement against the entertainment group and reinforcing the importance of its video technology licensing portfolio.
InterDigital’s latest Disney injunction adds another favourable ruling to its ongoing efforts to enforce its video technology intellectual property.
The Düsseldorf Local Division of the UPC found that Disney infringed an InterDigital patent covering technology used to provide seamless viewing when sharing video between devices. The court ruled that InterDigital is entitled to an injunction covering Germany and the Netherlands and confirmed the validity of the patent.
This marks the third injunction InterDigital has obtained against Disney through the UPC. The previous two involved patents covering certain video encoding techniques related to High Efficiency Video Coding, or HEVC.
InterDigital has separately secured injunctions from national courts in Germany and Brazil involving intellectual property related to high dynamic range technology, the dynamic overlaying of multiple video streams and additional HEVC and AVC encoding technologies.
The latest ruling matters because intellectual property licensing sits at the centre of InterDigital’s business model. Successful enforcement may strengthen the company’s position when seeking compensation from companies using technologies covered by its patent portfolio.
The decision also extends beyond the HEVC technologies involved in InterDigital’s earlier UPC victories. The latest patent relates to the user experience of sharing video content across devices, illustrating the broader range of streaming technologies within the company’s portfolio.
For investors, the series of rulings may support the credibility of InterDigital’s patent enforcement strategy across multiple jurisdictions. The UPC is particularly relevant because it can issue decisions applying across multiple EU countries, potentially giving patent owners a broader enforcement mechanism than individual national proceedings.
However, the latest judgment does not end the dispute. Disney retains the right to appeal, meaning the ultimate legal and commercial implications remain subject to further proceedings.
Disney’s response to the Düsseldorf decision and any appeal will be the immediate development to monitor.
Investors can also watch for further decisions involving InterDigital’s video patents and whether its growing record of injunctions leads to progress in its efforts to receive licensing returns for Disney’s use of its technologies.
