Qualcomm Technologies (NASDAQ:QCOM) shares jumped 9.5% after the company announced a multi-generational collaboration with Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) focused on customised silicon and high-speed optical connectivity for artificial intelligence data centres.
The agreement will see Qualcomm work with Amazon Web Services to develop energy-efficient silicon designed for large-scale AI infrastructure, alongside optical connectivity technology capable of supporting speeds of up to 1.6T.
As part of the broader commercial relationship, Qualcomm will issue Amazon a warrant to purchase up to 25 million shares of QCOM common stock, creating a potentially significant equity link between the two companies as they expand their collaboration.
The partnership targets growing computing and bandwidth requirements created by generative AI, particularly demanding inference workloads that require both high processing performance and rapid movement of data across increasingly large data-centre networks.
Qualcomm will work directly with AWS to design customised silicon for large-scale AI data centres, combining Amazon’s cloud infrastructure with Qualcomm’s experience in high-performance, power-efficient semiconductor design.
Cristiano Amon, President and CEO of Qualcomm Incorporated, said: “As AI demand accelerates, data center infrastructure will require advances in both computing and connectivity to deliver greater performance with more efficiency.”
Amon said Qualcomm is drawing on decades of experience in power-efficient computing to “deliver breakthrough performance and enable the next generation of AI infrastructure.”
The collaboration broadens Qualcomm’s exposure to the rapidly expanding AI data-centre market at a time when cloud providers are investing heavily in specialised computing infrastructure to support increasingly complex AI models and applications.
Computing silicon represents only part of the partnership. Qualcomm and AWS will also jointly develop high-speed optical connectivity technology using Qualcomm’s SerDes and optical digital signal processing capabilities.
The companies are targeting connectivity speeds of up to 1.6T as data centres contend with rapidly increasing volumes of traffic between processors, accelerators and other infrastructure.
Prasad Kalyanaraman, Vice President at AWS, said the agreement “builds on a strong foundation of partnership and reflects our shared commitment to pushing the boundaries of what’s possible.”
Faster and more energy-efficient connectivity has become increasingly important as AI clusters expand, with network bandwidth potentially creating a bottleneck even when additional computing capacity is available.
The partnership will also work in the opposite direction, with Qualcomm increasing its use of AWS artificial intelligence infrastructure and services, including Amazon Bedrock.
Qualcomm plans to apply the technology to electronic design automation workflows used in semiconductor development, with the aim of shortening chip design cycles and improving engineering productivity.
The combination of custom AI silicon, next-generation optical connectivity and deeper integration between the companies’ respective technologies significantly expands the scope of their existing relationship.
For investors, the potential 25 million-share warrant adds another dimension to the agreement by aligning Amazon more directly with Qualcomm’s longer-term performance. Together with Qualcomm’s increased exposure to AI data-centre spending, the announcement provided a strong catalyst for the 9.5% rise in QCOM shares.
