Garmin rolls out new feature updates for select smartwatches and cycling computers

Latest software release includes fall detection, hands-free voice control, new running plans and more

OLATHE, Kan., Sept. 22, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- Garmin (NYSE: GRMN) today announced several new software and feature updates for select smartwatches, including the fēnix^® 8 series, Forerunner^® 570 and Forerunner 970, Venu^® 4 and vívoactive^® 6, as well as compatible Edge^® cycling computers. These features can help customers get even more from their device and take their training to the next level.

Fall detection

Get added peace of mind with fall detection, now available on Venu 4 smartwatches. If a hard fall is detected, the watch will send a message¹ with the user's live location to preset assistance contacts. Activate the feature for all-day monitoring or enable detection for only the activities you specify.

Smartwatch updates

• Hands-free voice control: Start a timer, start an activity, turn on a compatible watch's flashlight and more without pressing any buttons – simply say "Okay, Garmin." To access the virtual assistant on a paired smartphone, say "phone assistant."
• Quick workouts: Runners can simplify their training and get quick running workout suggestions tailored to their fitness level just by inputting a desired time and intensity level.
• Garmin Run Coach plans: Train for an event, achieve a milestone or improve fitness with new plans that include run/walk workouts and lower volume training. These plans also adapt daily based on health and recovery metrics.
• Indoor XC Ski: Track indoor ski sessions while preparing for a race or doing functional training with this activity profile, which includes support for compatible indoor ski trainers.

Edge cycling computer updates

• Enduro ride profile enhancements: The Enduro ride profile now automatically detects and switches between climbing and descent modes, giving riders a more seamless riding experience.

These free software updates have started to roll out to compatible devices. Customers can update their smartwatch or cycling computer by enabling automatic updates from their device and syncing with Garmin Connect or by using Garmin Express^™.
