Global Bond Yields Tapping Multi-Year Highs

Asian markets finished sharply lower on Thursday, as rising oil prices and renewed U.S.-Iran tensions weighed on sentiment. Hong Kong's Hang Seng fell 1.4%, with HSBC’s Hong Kong shares tumbling nearly 4% following alleged job cuts in its U.K. wealth management business. Japan's Nikkei shed 1.4%, while South Korea's Kospi plunged 2.6% and China's Shanghai Composite lost 0.8%.

European bourses are also lower today, as global bond yields climb. U.K. 10-year borrowing costs hit a 19-year high, while French government bond yields rose to multiyear highs. Bank of France Governor Emmanuel Moulin warned that Europe's inflation is being driven entirely by energy prices, with geopolitical tensions spilling over into financial markets. Meanwhile, Germany raised its 2026 economic growth forecast to 1.3% from 0.5%, noting that the Iran war has had less of an impact than feared. London's FTSE 100 is down 0.1%, while France's CAC 40 and Germany's DAX are off 0.5% and 0.9%, respectively.
