Microchip Technology (NASDAQ:MCHP) has announced an expansion of its data centre technology portfolio, introducing new connectivity, storage controller and acceleration products designed to support increasingly complex computing infrastructure.
In an announcement dated 12 October 2026, the semiconductor company outlined enhancements across its Switchtec PCIe, Flashtec NVMe and Adaptec SmartRAID product families, targeting improvements in data transfer, storage performance, security and system management.
The expanded portfolio is intended to address infrastructure requirements across modern data centres, where higher computing workloads and growing storage demands are increasing the need for efficient connectivity and data management.
Among the new offerings is the Switchtec PCIe 6.0 Low-Lane-Count switch, which supports up to 64 PCIe Gen 6 lanes and 32 ports, alongside multiple bifurcation configurations.
The device incorporates integrated Direct Memory Access functionality to support peer-to-peer data transfers, allowing connected components to exchange information without requiring all data movement to pass through a central processor.
Additional features include PCIe Multicast and partitioning capabilities, which are designed to improve data distribution and resource management across connected devices.
Microchip has also incorporated hardware root of trust and secure boot capabilities, providing security mechanisms intended to help protect systems against unauthorised firmware and software modifications.
The company separately announced enhancements to its Flashtec NVMe 5016 controller, a PCIe Gen 5 storage device designed for high-performance solid-state storage applications.
The updated controller adds support for the Commercial National Security Algorithm Suite 2.0, which Microchip said is intended to address emerging post-quantum cybersecurity requirements.
The security update comes as technology companies and infrastructure operators prepare for the potential long-term implications of quantum computing for existing encryption standards.
Microchip has also introduced dual-port functionality to the Flashtec controller, enabling redundant data paths intended to improve storage availability and resilience.
Further enhancements include advanced virtualisation capabilities and Quality of Service management features, supporting more flexible allocation of storage resources across different applications and workloads.
In addition, Microchip has expanded its Adaptec SmartRAID 4300 family of NVMe RAID storage accelerators with new security, configuration and operating system compatibility features.
The updated products support self-encrypting drives with both local and remote key management, allowing organisations to manage storage encryption across different infrastructure environments.
Support for RAID 6 and RAID 60 configurations has also been added, providing additional options for data protection and storage redundancy.
The company has expanded operating system compatibility to include Linux, Debian, Ubuntu and Microsoft Windows 11.
Other updates include dynamic NVMe configuration, persistent event logging and support for the StorageCore application programming interface, allowing integration with third-party management tools.
Brian McCarson, Corporate Vice President and General Manager of Microchip’s Data Centre Solutions Business Unit, said the product expansion reflects customers’ requirements for integrated infrastructure technologies.
“Customers are looking for technology partners that can address multiple challenges across the infrastructure stack while helping simplify design and accelerate deployment,” McCarson said.
The additions extend Microchip’s offerings across several areas of data centre infrastructure, from high-speed component connectivity to storage control, security and data protection.
By expanding multiple product families, the company aims to provide data centre operators and equipment manufacturers with a broader range of technologies for designing and managing computing systems.
Microchip did not disclose specific pricing or availability dates for the new products, noting that these will vary by device.
