ManpowerGroup Shares Fall Nearly 20% as Q3 Revenue Misses Forecasts and Q4 Outlook Disappoints

By Fiona Craig | October 15, 2026, 9:56 AM

ManpowerGroup Inc. (NYSE:MAN) shares fell 19.75% in pre-market trading on Thursday after the workforce solutions company reported third-quarter 2026 revenue slightly below analysts’ expectations and issued fourth-quarter earnings guidance that fell short of consensus forecasts.

The company reported adjusted earnings of $1.01 per share for the third quarter, matching analysts’ estimates. Revenue reached $4.84 billion, compared with expectations of $4.85 billion.

Despite the revenue miss, quarterly sales increased 4% from $4.63 billion in the corresponding period of 2025. On a constant currency basis, revenue grew 5%, supported by stronger performance in the company’s Manpower brand, particularly in the United States.

However, the weaker-than-expected fourth-quarter outlook weighed on investor sentiment, contributing to the sharp decline in the company’s share price ahead of the market opening.

Fourth-Quarter Earnings Guidance Falls Below Expectations

ManpowerGroup forecast fourth-quarter earnings per share of between $1.03 and $1.13.

The midpoint of the guidance range, at $1.08 per share, was below the analyst consensus estimate of $1.10.

Although the difference between the guidance midpoint and market expectations was relatively small, the forecast suggested that earnings could remain under pressure during the final quarter of 2026.

The outlook followed a third quarter in which revenue growth was supported by stronger demand in certain markets, while other regions continued to experience challenging operating conditions.

The company’s guidance also provided investors with an indication of management’s expectations for profitability as it approaches the end of the financial year.

Third-Quarter Revenue Rises 4% Despite Forecast Miss

ManpowerGroup reported third-quarter revenue of $4.84 billion, representing an increase of approximately 4% compared with the $4.63 billion recorded a year earlier.

On a constant currency basis, revenue increased 5%, indicating that underlying sales growth was stronger when the effects of exchange rate movements were excluded.

The company’s Manpower brand was a significant contributor to the improvement, with particularly strong performance in the US market.

Jonas Prising, Chair and Chief Executive Officer of ManpowerGroup, highlighted the company’s operational progress.

“We delivered another quarter of consistent performance and strong execution as momentum continues across the organization,” Prising said. “Our Manpower brand continues to lead the way, with notable share gains in the U.S.”

The comments reflected management’s assessment of the company’s competitive position, particularly within its US staffing operations.

Nevertheless, revenue remained slightly below analysts’ expectations, while the fourth-quarter forecast indicated a more cautious near-term earnings outlook.

Reported Earnings Improve Despite Restructuring Charges

ManpowerGroup reported earnings under generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) of $0.71 per diluted share for the third quarter, compared with $0.38 per share in the same period last year.

The increase represented an improvement in reported profitability despite several costs and adjustments recognised during the quarter.

These included restructuring expenses, costs associated with the company’s strategic transformation programme, an adjustment related to a business sale and non-cash currency translation losses associated with hyperinflationary accounting in Argentina.

Together, these items reduced third-quarter earnings per share by $0.30.

Excluding the impact of the adjustments, ManpowerGroup reported earnings of $1.01 per share, in line with market expectations.

The difference between reported and adjusted earnings reflected the financial impact of restructuring and other items during the period.

The company’s ongoing transformation initiatives remain relevant to its operating performance as management seeks to improve efficiency and profitability across its international business.

US Revenue Grows While Northern Europe Returns to Profit

ManpowerGroup reported differing performance trends across its major geographic markets during the quarter.

Revenue in the United States increased 5.5% year-on-year to $728.8 million, reflecting continued momentum in the company’s domestic staffing operations.

The improvement was consistent with management’s comments regarding market share gains by the Manpower brand.

Northern Europe also recorded a significant improvement in profitability.

Operating unit profit in the region reached $7.5 million, compared with an operating loss of $14.9 million in the third quarter of 2025.

The result represented a positive year-on-year swing of $22.4 million, indicating a substantial recovery in the region’s operating performance.

However, conditions remained more challenging in France, where revenue declined 3.5% to $1.13 billion.

The contraction in France contrasted with the growth recorded in the United States and highlighted differences in demand across the company’s international markets.

The regional results showed that ManpowerGroup’s overall revenue growth was accompanied by varying levels of operating performance across its geographic businesses.

Becky Frankiewicz Named Chief Executive From January 2027

Alongside its financial results, ManpowerGroup announced a planned leadership transition.

Becky Frankiewicz will become Chief Executive Officer on 1 January 2027, succeeding Jonas Prising.

Prising, who currently serves as Chair and Chief Executive Officer, will move into the role of Executive Chair.

The announcement establishes a timetable for the leadership change as ManpowerGroup enters its next financial year.

The transition will take place as the company continues its strategic transformation initiatives and manages differing labour market conditions across its international operations.

The company did not provide additional financial guidance specifically related to the leadership change.

Investors Focus on Earnings Outlook Following Sharp Share Decline

ManpowerGroup’s third-quarter results presented a mixed picture of its financial performance.

Revenue increased year-on-year, adjusted earnings met expectations and reported earnings per share improved compared with the previous year.

The company also recorded stronger US revenue and a return to operating profitability in Northern Europe.

However, the modest revenue shortfall, weaker performance in France and fourth-quarter earnings guidance below consensus expectations contributed to a negative market reaction.

The 19.75% pre-market share price decline indicated that investors were placing significant weight on the company’s near-term outlook despite improvements in several operating measures.

Attention will now turn to ManpowerGroup’s fourth-quarter performance, the progress of its strategic transformation programme and the planned leadership transition at the beginning of 2027.
