Regions Financial Shares Rise 2.27% as Third-Quarter Earnings Beat Estimates Despite Revenue Shortfall

By Fiona Craig | October 16, 2026, 6:58 AM

Regions Financial Corporation (NYSE:RF) reported third-quarter 2026 adjusted earnings above analyst expectations on Friday, supported by higher net interest income, improved lending margins and growth in capital markets revenue.

The US banking group posted adjusted earnings per share of $0.73, exceeding the consensus forecast of $0.66 by $0.07. Revenue reached $1.97 billion, slightly below analysts’ expectations of $1.99 billion.

Regions Financial shares advanced 2.27% in premarket trading following the announcement.

Revenue increased 3.0% compared with the third quarter of 2025, while adjusted earnings rose 11% year on year to $622 million.

The results reflected growth in interest income, stronger capital markets activity and improved credit quality, although average deposits declined during the period.

Net Interest Income Increases 3.3% to $1.30 Billion

Regions Financial reported net interest income of $1.30 billion for the third quarter, representing a 3.3% increase compared with the corresponding period last year.

The improvement was supported by the turnover of fixed-rate assets, growth in average lending balances and higher income from hedging activities.

The bank’s net interest margin expanded to 3.68%, compared with 3.59% in the third quarter of 2025.

The nine-basis-point improvement indicates that Regions generated a higher margin from its interest-earning assets relative to the cost of funding those assets.

The increase in net interest income contributed to the bank’s earnings performance and helped offset the modest shortfall in total revenue compared with market expectations.

Capital Markets Income Reaches Record $107 Million

Non-interest income increased 2.4% year on year to $675 million on a reported basis.

Capital markets income reached a record $107 million, representing growth of 2.9% compared with the third quarter of 2025.

The increase was driven by higher revenue from mergers and acquisitions advisory services and securities underwriting fees.

These activities contributed to the bank’s fee-based income during the quarter, providing an additional source of revenue beyond traditional lending operations.

Service charges on deposit accounts also increased, rising 6.9% year on year to $171 million.

The improvement was supported by record Treasury Management income, reflecting higher revenue from services provided to business customers.

The performance of these operations contributed to the overall increase in non-interest income.

Adjusted Earnings Rise 11% Year on Year

Regions Financial reported adjusted earnings of $622 million, compared with the third quarter of 2025, representing an 11% increase.

Adjusted earnings per share reached $0.73, exceeding the analyst consensus estimate of $0.66.

The earnings beat came despite revenue of $1.97 billion falling short of the $1.99 billion forecast.

The results indicate that the bank generated stronger adjusted profitability while maintaining revenue growth compared with the previous year.

Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer John Turner highlighted the bank’s approach to risk management and financial performance.

“By remaining disciplined in our approach to risk management and staying committed to soundness, profitability, and growth, we are delivering strong results built on solid fundamentals and a competitive strategy,” Turner said.

The comments followed improvements in credit quality and continued capital returns to shareholders during the quarter.

Credit Quality Improves as Net Charge-Off Ratio Declines

Regions Financial reported improved credit quality during the third quarter.

Annualised net charge-offs declined to 0.29% of average loans, compared with 0.42% in the preceding quarter.

The reduction indicates a lower rate of loans being written off, net of recoveries, relative to the bank’s average lending balances.

The proportion of criticised loans within the business services portfolio also declined.

Business services criticised loans represented 4.71% of total business loans, compared with 5.01% in the second quarter.

Criticised loans are generally those identified by a bank as having elevated credit risk or weaknesses that require closer monitoring.

The decline in this measure suggests an improvement in the reported risk profile of the bank’s business lending portfolio.

Together, the lower charge-off rate and reduction in criticised loans indicate stronger credit performance compared with the preceding quarter.

Average Loans Increase to $99.2 Billion

Average loans increased 0.5% during the quarter to $99.2 billion.

The growth was driven primarily by commercial and industrial lending, reflecting higher average balances in financing provided to business customers.

The increase in lending activity contributed to the bank’s higher net interest income.

However, average deposits declined 1.2% to $129.1 billion.

The contrasting movements in loans and deposits reflect changes in the composition of the bank’s balance sheet during the quarter.

Deposit balances remain an important source of funding for Regions Financial, while loan growth supports its interest-earning activities.

Investors will continue to monitor the relationship between lending expansion, deposit trends and funding costs in subsequent reporting periods.

Regions Maintains Estimated CET1 Capital Ratio of 10.8%

Regions Financial reported an estimated Common Equity Tier 1 (CET1) capital ratio of 10.8% for the third quarter.

The CET1 ratio measures a bank’s highest-quality regulatory capital relative to its risk-weighted assets and provides an indication of its capacity to absorb potential losses.

The reported level reflects the bank’s capital position while continuing to return funds to shareholders.

During the quarter, Regions repurchased approximately 3 million shares for a total of $95 million.

The company also declared $255 million in dividends to common shareholders.

Combined, the announced share repurchases and dividends represented $350 million in capital returns and declared distributions during the period.

The buybacks and dividend declarations formed part of the bank’s ongoing capital allocation activities.

Investors Respond to Earnings Growth and Improved Credit Metrics

Regions Financial’s third-quarter results demonstrated growth in adjusted earnings, net interest income and fee-based revenue.

Adjusted earnings per share of $0.73 exceeded analyst expectations, while net interest margin increased to 3.68% and capital markets income reached a record $107 million.

The bank also reported improvements in credit quality, with annualised net charge-offs declining to 0.29% and criticised business loans falling as a proportion of the portfolio.

However, revenue of $1.97 billion remained below consensus expectations, and average deposits decreased during the quarter.

The 2.27% premarket increase in Regions Financial shares followed the earnings announcement.

Investors will be assessing whether the bank can sustain interest income growth, maintain its improved credit performance and manage deposit trends while continuing to return capital to shareholders.
