Fifth Third Bancorp (NYSE:FITB) reported third-quarter 2026 adjusted earnings per share of $1.13, exceeding analysts’ consensus estimate of $0.83 by $0.30, as the bank continued integrating Comerica following its acquisition earlier in the year.
The US banking group reported earnings per share of $0.90 on a reported basis for the quarter ended 30 September 2026.
Revenue increased 49% year on year to $3.28 billion, primarily reflecting the inclusion of Comerica’s operations. Net income available to common shareholders rose 36% to $828 million from $608 million in the corresponding period of 2025.
Fifth Third shares declined approximately 0.79% in premarket trading following the announcement.
Fifth Third reported net interest income of $2.28 billion on a fully taxable-equivalent basis, representing a 3% increase from the previous quarter.
The bank attributed the increase to higher market interest rates, the repricing of fixed-rate assets and growth in its loan portfolio.
The year-on-year increase in total revenue reflected the addition of Comerica following the completion of the acquisition earlier in 2026.
The combination expanded Fifth Third’s operations and contributed to changes in its lending and deposit balances compared with the previous year.
The bank’s adjusted earnings per share exceeded market expectations, although reported earnings were lower than the adjusted figure.
Fifth Third completed the conversion of Comerica’s banking systems during the quarter, reporting continued retention of clients and banking staff.
Chief Executive Officer Tim Spence said the results reflected the financial contribution of the combined banking group.
“Fifth Third’s third quarter reflected the earnings power of the combined company,” Spence said. “Even while integrating Comerica, our adjusted return on tangible common equity and efficiency ratio improved from the second quarter, and credit performance remained stable.”
The bank also reported an increase in its deposit market share across several regions.
According to Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) data cited by Fifth Third, the company maintained deposit market share gains in the southeastern United States and recorded additional gains in Michigan, Texas and California, markets previously served by Comerica.
Core deposits increased 3% from the previous quarter to $236 billion.
The loan-to-core deposit ratio declined to 76% from 77% in the second quarter, reflecting a lower proportion of core deposits represented by outstanding loans.
Average portfolio loans and leases reached $179 billion during the third quarter, increasing 1% sequentially and 45% from the corresponding period last year.
The substantial year-on-year increase was primarily attributable to the Comerica acquisition.
Commercial lending balances increased by approximately $1.5 billion compared with the second quarter.
Consumer lending balances remained broadly unchanged over the same period.
The figures indicate that commercial lending contributed to sequential loan growth, while the acquisition accounted for most of the increase compared with the previous year.
Fifth Third reported net charge-offs equivalent to 0.31% of average portfolio loans during the quarter.
This compared with 0.30% in the second quarter and 1.09% in the corresponding period of 2025.
The quarterly increase was limited, while the year-on-year comparison showed a lower rate of realised credit losses.
Net charge-offs represent loans that a bank determines are unlikely to be recovered, after accounting for recoveries.
The allowance for credit losses stood at 1.74% of total portfolio loans at the end of the quarter.
This reserve is intended to cover expected credit losses within the bank’s lending portfolio.
The reported figures provide an indication of credit performance during the period as Fifth Third continued integrating Comerica’s loan operations.
Fifth Third reported noninterest expenses of $2.05 billion, representing a 3% decline from the previous quarter.
Excluding certain items and non-qualified deferred compensation, adjusted noninterest expenses decreased 2% sequentially to $1.82 billion.
The bank’s adjusted efficiency ratio improved to 54.6%, compared with 57.1% in the second quarter.
The efficiency ratio measures operating expenses relative to revenue, with a lower figure indicating that a smaller proportion of revenue is being used to cover operating costs.
The reduction occurred while the bank was completing the conversion of Comerica’s systems and continuing its integration activities.
Management also reported an improvement in adjusted return on tangible common equity compared with the previous quarter, although a specific percentage was not included in the supplied results.
Fifth Third’s Common Equity Tier 1 (CET1) capital ratio increased to 10.02% at the end of the third quarter, compared with 9.93% in the preceding quarter.
The CET1 ratio is a regulatory measure of a bank’s core equity capital relative to its risk-weighted assets.
The increase indicates a higher reported capital ratio compared with the end of the second quarter.
Fifth Third did not repurchase any common shares during the reporting period.
The bank’s capital position remains relevant as it manages the financial and operational effects of the Comerica acquisition.
Fifth Third’s third-quarter results reflected the addition of Comerica, higher net interest income and sequential reductions in operating expenses.
Adjusted earnings per share of $1.13 exceeded the $0.83 analyst consensus, while revenue reached $3.28 billion and net income available to common shareholders increased to $828 million.
The bank also reported higher core deposits, an increase in commercial lending and a lower net charge-off rate compared with the previous year.
With Comerica’s systems conversion completed, investors will be monitoring the combined group’s operating expenses, lending activity, deposit trends and credit performance in subsequent reporting periods.
The results provide an initial indication of the enlarged banking group’s financial performance following the acquisition, although year-on-year comparisons continue to reflect the addition of Comerica’s operations.
