Nvidia Corporation (NASDAQ:NVDA) is in discussions about investing hundreds of millions of dollars in Australian artificial intelligence cloud infrastructure provider Firmus Grid, according to a report published by The Information late on Tuesday.
Nvidia already holds an equity stake in Firmus Grid and has invested in several other companies operating in the AI cloud infrastructure sector.
Firmus operates as a neocloud provider, offering computing infrastructure designed for artificial intelligence applications. Companies in this sector have increasingly relied on debt financing to support infrastructure development and operational expansion.
The reported investment discussions follow Firmus Grid’s decision earlier in October to abandon plans for an initial public offering on the Australian stock market.
The company cited recent financial market volatility as the reason for withdrawing its listing proposal, stating that proceeding under those conditions would not be in shareholders’ interests.
Firmus had previously outlined plans for an IPO at a valuation exceeding $30 billion. At that level, the transaction would have ranked among the largest stock market listings in Australian history.
The cancellation came amid declines in the market valuations of AI and cloud infrastructure companies, as investors assessed rising debt levels and the long-term financing requirements associated with expanding computing capacity.
The sector has faced increased scrutiny over whether current levels of expenditure on AI infrastructure can be sustained and how quickly those investments may generate financial returns.
CoreWeave (NASDAQ:CRWV), another AI cloud infrastructure provider backed by Nvidia, has been among the companies affected by the decline in sector valuations.
CoreWeave shares have lost approximately 27% of their value over the past month, according to the reported figures.
Nvidia’s existing investments in AI cloud providers form part of its involvement in the broader infrastructure market, where companies purchase advanced computing hardware to support AI model development and deployment.
The Information did not report a confirmed agreement between Nvidia and Firmus Grid. The proposed investment amount, transaction structure and potential completion date remain unconfirmed.
